Daryl was awesome, very helpful, and CLAS will help with anything you dont get.
great professor. tells a joke everyday. makes class fun to go to. homework doesn't really help too much, but its worth around 10% of your grade. practice exams are very similar to actual exams, they're all i studied and i got 100% on all three
I really like his attitude in class, but he never really explains the content, he rather expects you to know it right away. The homework is completely pointless compared to the tests. Way too many SAT-like word problems. What's nice is that he truly wants you to get a good grade, and there's a lot of possibilities for you to catch up if you do bad.
Overall pretty good, not amazing but pretty clear and definitely funny
It was a fun and interesting class, even though it was at 9 in the morning. He made going to class interesting and enjoyable at the start of class.
I didn't take calc in high school but Cooper made it pretty easy to understand the material. He makes the class fun with the videos and all his jokes. Homework 3 times a week, lots of word problems. I did CLAS and had study groups. Go to every class (clicker), read the book before lecture, and do the practice midterms.
Great professor, loved Cooper, his class was always entertaining and he was very intructful. Take him!
Cooper is the greatest math teacher i have ever had! If you have taken calculus in high school this class will be very easy. I got a 2 on the AP calc test and got and A+ in this class. Textbook is not much help, HW 3 times a week and practice tests are very helpful. 10/10 do recommend.
Cooper is a great guy who's willing to help clarify whatever you may be confused on; go to his OH! also Sean (Cui is his surname) is a great TA. have to get past his accent, but I found him to be very helpful too. book is good to look at examples/solutions but I feel like I didn't need it much. Cooper makes lectures interesting, great jokes haha.
If you took calc in high school, class will be easy for you! Has iclicker every day to count attendance & there is a quiz every week in section. Textbook is ok, not very good at explaining concepts. Questions asked in class are easy, but hw questions can be hard & seem unrelated to what you learn in class. Overall easy if you try & go to class.
so much easier than high school calculus, but there is too much word problems. homework is irrelevant to the test, so make sure to do the practice midterms/finals instead. wished cooper spends more time on test like problems. overall, enjoyed this even though math is not my forte.
I'm not very math proficient (Poli-Sci major) but this class was easier than expected. CLAS was way more helpful than lecture and homework was a pain at times but its manageable. Lecture is mandatory due to iClicker and you're guaranteed a B if he sees you putting in effort. Take it seriously and put in a couple of hours for exams and you're good.
Spends half the lecture telling bad jokes when he could be actually educating his students. Makes the first half of the course super easy and the second half nearly impossible unless you put in extra time. Don't take this course unless you REALLY have to. Or take it with someone else if you can
way too many word problem emphasis. students swear the tests are the same, but he does not spend enough time going over how to combat word problems which are the greatest part of the test. i honestly learned only 2-3 things this quarter. nice guy, energetic, but really needs to update his teaching skills or at least change the tests.
This was probably my favorite class of the quarter, not because I like math, but because Cooper is almost as efficient at waking you up in the morning as coffee is. He is hilarious and has so much energy & passion (even at 9am). As for success in the class, if you do the practice exams and show an effort on homework, you'll be fine.
I was terrified going into this class, I had never taken calculus before and was under the impression that the class was going to be taught under the assumption that all the students knew basic calc. This was not the case. The class was very engaging and interesting. Cooper is the type of professor that makes his students excited about math.
I had never taken calculus in high school and personally found this class easy. He is both clear and helpful. Attendance and participation is done with an iclicker. Practice midterms/finals reflect actual exams very well. Rarely used the book, only a few times for a few lectures/homework assignments. Overall an easy class and nice professor.
Cooper is a great teacher. as long as you attend all lectures, sections, and attempt all homework you are basically given a B. never took calc before and got a B. final was more challenging than practice ones that he provided but overall not a hard class.
Daryl is an amazing teacher! I highly recommend this class. The class is easy to pass as long as you keep up with homework, attend lectures and do the practice midterms. He gives you everything you need to succeed! The class is lots of fun too, Daryl has a great sense of humor and is just a really a cool person.
All you need to do is go to class for iclicker, do your homework, do your best to go to section, and do relatively well on the final. Don't worry about the miderms much at all they're barely worth anything. But learn how to do crazy word problems (they aren't bad once you do them enough). Never took Calc in high school but got a B in the class.
He's a pretty great guy, but lectures can be pointless except that uses iClicker and iClicker is part of the grade boost he does at the end. His midterms are fairly easy and are almost like the practice tests he uploads. The final, however, was significantly harder than the practice. Overall, if you've taken any kind of Calc prior, you are good.
Was promised a curve. Curve does not help grades above a B. Needed the curve to meet my honors GPA requirement. Consequently, did not. Mad. Also, only used textbook about twice during the entire quarter. Take 3A instead. Word problems are confusing.
These ratings make Cooper seem like the holy grail of UCSB, however, he is a pretty average teacher. Good personality, lame jokes, very clear in his lectures. Gives practice exams that are pretty similar to the real thing (final ended up being significantly harder though), but does not give answers to them. Very easy if you took AP Calc. Iclicker!
Cooper is a great teacher that genuinely wants students to do well. He teaches with enthusiasm and the material is not hard at all. I took AP Calc in high school and 34A is a joke compared to that. Use the practice tests because they are almost identical to the real ones and you'll have no problem getting an A.
