One of the most straightforward and easy to listen to professors I've ever had. You'll pass with flying colors as long as you don't procrastinate!
The exams are a tad bit more difficult than the practice exams so make sure you understand the material instead of memorize. You can learn topics on your own online and do well in the class. Attendance mandatory, uses iclicker, and homework is doable without the answers in the back of the book.
The class is easy if you have taken AP calculus AB. Cooper is very funny and tells a lot of jokes. I enjoyed being in his class.
Daryl explains things very well.. on top of the easy material in class. I really enjoyed this class.
Daryl makes the class interesting for a math class...if you do your hw (attempt every assignment), don't miss more than 3 days of iclicker, and attend all sections then a B is easy. He cares, he wants his students to pass especially if they need it for their major.
The class itself is pretty hard for me! But he made it fun and he definitely really cares about his students and want them to pass. Fall quarter I had him for Math 34A and Winter quarter I have him for Math 34B, he's still such a super nice and amazing professors! He's definitely gonna stay one of my favorites! (:
Good class, he made lectures pretty fun and the midterms were much easier than the homework.
I am a transfer student and haven't had math in almost two years. I was nervous about being completely lost but his lectures were easy to follow and understand. You had 3 hw assignments a week and they werent bad plus you could look at the similar examples in the book if you got stuck. The practice exams were good because his exams were similar !
Passionate teacher, jokes are lame but it makes the class more entertaining.. and for that person who said not too muc seriousness.. common really.. you would prefer a boring teacher that has no fun rather than someone who enjoys what he is doing while he explains concept with interest? .. any way to do well put in effort. FUN CLASS!
too many jokes... not enough serious lecture or examples. moves too fast from topic to topic
DARYL is awesome!! attendance is mandatory because of iclickers, there is a lot of homework, but overall if you go to class and study the practice midterms you should do well in this class! I had Daryl for both 34A and B, if you have questions he is very approachable! :)
He is a intelligent guy, but he is not good at teaching. His lecture slides are confusing because there are random abbreviations and all the steps aren't explained. He is very unclear and the book is not helpful either. The book lacks examples. Also, he doesn't give you answers to the practice tests so you don't know if ur solving a problem right
This class is HARD. Cooper wrote the book and it it horrible. It has no examples and poor explanations. Yea he gives you a grade bump from a C to a B, but you DON'T LEARN ANYTHING in this class. And this is coming from a person who likes math. Get a different professor if you can. oh and it is impossible to get an A unless you already took hs calc
Cooper's a super nice British guy who tells jokes in class and cares about his students. He's a good teacher and alludes to what will be on his midterms. He posts practice midterms online that are nearly identical to the actual midterm. He gives an effort bonus (boosts your grade) if you do most homework assignments. Got an A+ but I'm good at math.
Excellent professor. Class is mandatory, but it's not a waste of time. Lecture helps a lot, and his tests get progressively easier. First midterm is only worth 6% of your grade so don't freak out. He gives practices tests for all the midterms and final which are nearly identical to the test.
Cooper is really hilarious. He tells jokes and his teachings is fairly simple. Homework and tests are somewhat confusing, but as you continue through the course, you'll understand a way around his word problems. Overall, he's a great professor. ALSO, he curves the grades at the end, which helped me a lot!
great teacher, he tells jokes to students during lecture with his nice british accent.
He is very helpful and very fair. His effort bonus helped my grade and his test preparation materials were helpful.
Cooper is the funniest teacher ever! He always starts class with some sort of entertaining video ( even before tests ) and gives you the confidence that you will do well in his class. The material can be a bit tricky, but if you go to section and occasionally CLAS you'll do fine. I don't believe he gives anyone a grade lower than a C.
This professor likes to joke around a lot. His jokes weren't very funny to me. It kind of seemed like he was trying too hard and he was kind of cocky. Its hard to follow his lectures because all of his math is typed out like this: 100/4(1*2)-3. Therefore It was kind of hard to follow.
Daryl is funny, helpful, smart, and really nice! He really does make sure you do well in the class and his lectures are helpful and entertaining (sometimes shows funny videos, etc). I only wish he could have provided more examples, word problem explanations, and answers to practice midterms. Provides effort bonus. Makes the math easy to understand.
Amazing instructor and cares about the success of all his student. He teaches for real world applications which is nice for the non science/math majors who need this for general ed or pre reqs. Lecture was honestly enjoyable! Super easy to pass if you just go to lecture/section and do the homework.
I took MATH34A with Cooper TWICE! In Fall 2010 and Fall 2012. He is by far one of the greatest professors at UCSB! He cares deeply for his students and tries to make the material understandable to his students. He provides old midterms and finals for practice! I hated him freshman year but as a junior now I know he is amazing.
Daryl is a wonderful teacher! He is extremely funny and understands that not everyone is good at math! Your effort goes a long way in this class, which I loved because I am not the best at math. He is very helpful and very entertaining. The only thing I would change is for him to have explanations by each example in the book. But great teacher!!
