Thanks Roger, for making absolutely zero COVID accommodations and keeping the curriculum the exact same as when we could actually learn in class. Really taking the whole "make it more difficult because the students are at home" thing to heart.
Lectures are somewhat fun. There can easily be hours and hours of homework due every single night. You will forget large hw assignments and there is no late work. And better yet, the homework is only worth like 20% of your grade. Be prepared for a midterm and especially final that almost completely decide your grade. Good luck! Avoid if you can.
If you enjoy crying twice a week doing an insane amount of homework, then take with him. Midterm wasn't too hard but I won't take a class with him again.
Freedman will not teach you physics. Its entirely on you to watch his recorded lectures before actually going to lecture. Unfortunately he doesnt actually teach during class time, but rather passes out worksheets you must complete. The homework he assigns will take you about 2 hours to complete, three times a week. People take 8ams to avoid him.
One of the most well-known professors at this university. Also the most arrogant, condescending, patronizing professor I've ever had. Treats all his students like idiots. Daring to ask for extensions/accommodations will net you the verbal equivalent of a slap upside the head. Stay on top of HW, and make sure you do the reading. It's VERY important.
I recently got my test results from the previous test and I just cried when I saw them. I spent hours upon hours reading his god forsaken textbook and did the homework several times. They did not help me at all. I did well in my other classes related to my engineering major, but this class is killing my hopes of attending further schooling.
I don't care how smart a man is. If he can not make things make sense, is arrogant and condescending, and cares more about the textbook he wrote than his students, he SHOULD NOT be allowed to teach. So glad I used an online version of his book. He doesn't deserve my money.
Wow, what an awful prof. Avoid him! Gives an insane amount of hw & does NO teaching. You learn by reading the textbook & come to lecture for clicker points (on ? that are ridiculously easy). Only reason I did well was bc of previous physics knowledge. A mean incredibly petty arrogant prof with 0 respect for students. Looks like he wants to hit ppl.
Professor Freedman is a fair professor ONLY for those students who had taken physics before. My physics experience in IB program really survived me through this course. His teaching & homework & tests required you to have a solid understanding of EVERYTHING he covered. Homework did help find your weakness. Overall not a great professor, but fair.
The way Freedman has his class structured makes it seem like a wild goose chase. You have to attend lecture. where he does minimal teaching and he assigns time consuming homework that is worth almost nothing. You can go to class and do the homework and still have no idea what's going on. Lecture definitely does not prepare you for exams.
Tons of homework, mandatory long lectures, and the mandatory two hour sections were pointless and took time away from studying. Final was extremely difficult and presented problems never seen before. He wrote the textbook which the class is wholly dependent on, and its practice problems are useless since we cant check half the answers...
Be prepared for 3 hours of homework 4 days a week, and exams that are about ten times difficult as anything you've ever seen on the homework. He makes you pay to take the homework online... and he's the one who wrote it
Intesting class!
If only he took feedback about how he runs his class, like he takes feedback to improve his precious textbook. Amt of hw assigned(4x a week) leaves no time to study for exams if you also want to eat/sleep/ pass your other classes, and the exams are ridiculously difficult in comparison to the HW. Lectures are mandatory but useless. AVOID this prof.
DO NOT TAKE PHYSICS WITH FREEDMAN! In his class, we did not go over any topics in class. We were expected to watch videos and learn the material ourselves. In class, we just did problems. I stayed in the class and got a C. I transferred from a Junior college and thought the professors at UCSB would be better. I was wrong.
Freedman makes you watch all lectures online before class but fails to explain or demonstrate the concepts within the lectures. Classes are basically only iclicker questions which solutions are not well explained either. He makes the classes mandatory but doesn't make the time in class worthwhile. He's an awesome guy but not a great professor.
Easy lectures, worksheets and midterm. However, the difficulty of final is definately out of my expectation. I think this professor is making a joke with his students, he must enjoy seeing the shock and confusion on their face when they are doing the finals. The lectures are not informative enough for students, but outclass resources are sufficient
Must watch prelectures before class, worksheets and iclickers (not for accuracy) everyday. 1 homework assignment/class. Doesnt work out problems in class, just explains concepts. Definitely go to clas or go to Vinces clas website for resources to help you. Midterm was a breeze and the final was a slap in the face. Class has a set curve: 85 A
Should stick to research. Not a good teacher
The classic case of a physicist who forgot how to human. His course page has so much unnecessary information in so many colors and fonts it gives me a headache just looking at it. Fantastic lecturer, but thats about it. Expect tons of repetition
Professor Freedman was very knowledgable about course material, however his class was "flipped", meaning we watched online lectures and solved problems during class. Definitely lots of homework. I found his class very difficult, although I did not have any previous Physics experience. I recommend doing difficult book problems for exam prep.
Freedman made lectures mandatory yet never went over anything in class. He expected you to know everything about physics despite never teaching it.
Well, this guy is the epitome of an wasted talent; he can teach, and listening to his explanation, I can see how such phenomena are happening, but this man. He doesn't try. With his ability to teach, he decides to make it hard on purpose for us.
This was my second quarter of having Freedman. Very difficult class and having a flipped classroom (online lectures, in class problem solving) only made it worse. Professor is the complete opposite of concise and has taken 30+ minutes during review sessions to go over very simple problems.
