Professor Sonstelie is great. The class really benefits people who study and work hard. If you study hard for the quizzes, go to class, and listen, then you are set. I had a high A, it was my easiest class of the quarter.
iClickers made the pointless lectures mandatory. You may feel pretty confident with the concepts you end up having to teach yourself, but when it came to quizzes and the final the questions are tricky and don't seem to resemble the questions he asked during lecture. Really disappointing class.
honestly hes a pretty bad professor. the curve is both good and bad. Its hard to get a good grade, but its hard to fail. His lectures are useless and its mandatory because of iclickers. experiments are a joke and good luck with homework because he never goes over it.
Man, Sonstelie can't teach for crap! He doesn't explain most of the clicker questions and goes waaay too fast on his slideshows. Btw, he WILL hit on you if you're a girl (mind you, he's about 70 years old).
The only reason this class is rated low in easiness is because of the Department curve which is very screwed. I wouldn't take this class unless you had to for your major.
He is helpful and understandable. If you want to ace his class, read the sections of the book that are assigned before discussion sections. The book is interesting clear. Lectures complement the rest. My advice is, do NOT waste your time taking notes in class. Just come prepared and listen to what he has to say.
Useful class, especially during these economic times. It puts things into perspective and is one of the most relevant econ classes. However the midterm and final are time consuming. Midterm is 13 or so essays. he picks one for the test. the Final is the original 13 plus 13 more. so 26, and he picks 2. Reading every day, and easy quiz every class.
I thought professor stonstelie was an amazing teacher. He is extremely well organized and really wants us to learn. You have hw, 3 quizzes, and then a final. Grade is broken up into many parts so pretty much everyone gets at least a c. Section is only required for half the quarter, then voluntary after that!
It sort of blows my mind that there are so many people complaining about professor Sonstelie. Professor Sonstelie's lectures are clear and well organized, and he's very open to helping you during office hours. If you: really study for quizzes and tests, read the book, and do the practice Q's/old quizzes you'll do well. It's really not that hard...
Horrible professor. Spent most lectures attempting to teach students about the current economic crisis in the US instead of teaching the actual concepts which I AM PAYING FOR! Focused more on silly examples than concepts that would be on tests. Often times, there would be questions on tests that nobody had ever seen. I ended up going to CLAS. Avoid
attendance is mandatory which sucks because we have iclickers eventhough the questions are easy. the quizzes are really hard and are nothing like the experiments or practice tests. his curve is really weird too and he basically wants everyone to get a C
this teacher was a bs teacher. goes way to fast, and when i look at the notes he has online, i don't understand. he explains the graphs on the slides and on the notes, there are no explanations on the graphs. hard class. take it with a different teacher.
Honestly, this is a hard class. The midterms and finals are very challenging, the section eetixperiments are stressful and sommes unfair, the clicker questions are irrelevant to the tests, and the homework is tedious (go to CLAS!)...but overall in the end you actually learn and know the material. Isnt that the whole point of college.
Solid.
Nice Man. Was able to explain the concepts in a way that I could understand. However there were somethings he did that made no sense such as the grading of the homework and not being allowed to use a calculator on the tests.
Look, every single positive comment about this "teacher" was written by one of his TAs. The greatest service I can do for another person is prevent them from taking this class with this teacher... just trust me.
Take this class with another teacher. He doesn't teach what is going to be on his tests in lecture, so there really is no point in going-except he makes you do clicker questions that count for 10% of your grade. My friends and I just took turns taking the clickers to lecture. Go to CLAS and homework help. The sections are competitive & annoying.
great professor and a great class. truely one of the best classes i've had at ucsb. a little tougher grader than most profs but he gives you all the tools to succeed in his class. no textbook, only a reader which are full of pretty interesting readings. if you have the chance, take this class with him!
The content in this course is so ridiculously easy considering how hard it is to get an A. Enjoy reading the Daily Nexus while sporadically taking out your iClicker and punch in what everyone else is doing. The textbook is complete garbage and the market games are infuriatingly useless. Learn the deceptively easy concepts from outside sources.
Expects everyone to get a C. Not a really hard class, but do go to CLAS. You need a 75% to get a B-, which is great. Do the H.W. and do well on the clicker questions and do well on at least two of the quizzes and you will be fine.
Go to CLAS! I cannot stress this enough! The class isn't too bad, but he does expect the majority of his students to receive a C, which I don't think is the best mindset. However, if you put enough time and energy into this class, it is quite possible to do decently well.
Great Professor, very nice, likes to have fun in class and covers relevant material. 3 quizzes, 1 MT and 1 Final, homework almost weekly. Class website is good and alot of outside help is available if needed. If you don't do well it's on you. Only gripe is he's a little too quick on the slides. My TA was also horrible, find one that actually cares.
Just accept the fact that you'll most likely get a C. His grading system requires perfection for that A (only 15% get an A), so good luck! The class itself though is very valuable and he's a good professor. Even though I got a C+, I learned the equivalent of an A.
