If econ isn't your major, take it as Pass or No Pass. Good luck... Join CLAS- it will be helpful.
This class is unnecessarily difficult. It's like he actively tries to make your life more difficult. His quiz and test questions are vague and tricky, and his explanations ended up confusing me even more. Golden tip: If you're not an econ major, don't take this class! Good luck and godspeed
was a good professor. sections were fun, sometimes the professor would come in to do the activities too. yahoo email ucsbgrl if anyone needs to buy the reader! has really good examples in class to make you understand more
this is the epitome of a weeder class. this class is infamous on campus for a reason. good luck trying to get into the major with the 2.75 minimum. don't take it in fall, there will be too many freshmen all thinking they're gonna be CEO's and you won't be ahead of the pack (10A isn't offered in spring). May the odds be ever in your favor..
Sonstelie is a boss. The class is amazing, so well organized and you can tell that he is there to TEACH! Tips for success: (1) Go to class (2) finish the homework with a friend and then double check it with the TA (3) Dedicate almost ALL of your studying time to the practice tests, and do them over and over
Good professor who knows his stuff. Attendance is technically mandatory due to iclicker questions, but they're not hard. Quizzes and Final is worth 60% but contains extremely complicated questions meant to trick you. There was no bell curve for my class (which resulted in tougher questions on tests, only 5% got A's).
Anyone who isn't an econ major or hasn't taken this class will tell you it's easy. I am here to tell you that they're wrong. If you take this class, don't get cocky. The homework, i-clicker, and section stuff is easy. However the midterms and the final are brutal. Don't take unless you are an econ major!
Would not advise taking if not for your major. Lecture attendance is mandatory for the most part (IClicker). hw can be annoying in how messing one calculation up can result in a chain of missed points. only complaint about quizzes are that the way the questions are worded was why i never got a 100% on one. overall a nice guy, knows his stuff.
Makes class harder than it really is. His lectures are pretty clear but pretty much useless because the quizzes and tests are nothing like the lectures. But he does have past exams online to study with which are better then lecture. Decent class I wouldn't take it unless you need to.
good professor, clear, quizzes are tricky, but study hard, read and you should do okay.
Went into the course expecting it to be easy. Was sadly mistaken, 3 quizes and final account for 60% of grade. The quizzes are worded in a very perplexed way and only out of 10 points, so if you miss one 10% gone. Do not take unless required, and if you do take the course study the practice quizzes profoundly.
What can I say? He explains clearly in lectures, nice guy, but quizzes are intense. My hopes were high when I got a 9/10 for the first one, but then I got a 6 on the second. Yeah...
Sontelie is the most adorable (in an old man way) econ professor you will ever have. He's very clear during lectures, and as long as you keep up with the reading, the curve should be in your favor. You don't need to take notes during lecture if you've already done so with the reading. Just listen and answer clickers q's!
Great professor, he enjoys teaching and tries to explain things no matter how long it takes. The class is not easy, but if you study hard you will do well. Uses iClickers every class which is kinda annoying. Make sure you study before the "quizzes" he gives 3 and a Final. They are huge parts of your grade.
Great professor! speaks really clearly and powerpoints are super helpful. but the class is still pretty difficult so don't underestimate the simplicity of lectures
Lecture is USELESS. Test is based entirely on 10 or so problems which purposely contain info to throw you off/trick you. Curve is the stupidest thing Ive ever heard of. He knows his econ, but his course is organized quite poorly.
His lectures are kinda helpful since he sometimes explain the concepts in a very confusing way (goes in a circle). Do all the materials/practices he provides and you will do well.
Lectures were useless. Tests were 10 questions so there is no room for error. Sometimes made explanations way more difficult than needed. All learning done in 50 minute CLAS. 55%-77% is a C everything else is uneffected by the curve. Econ majors need a 2.85 in 3 pre major classes to get into the major. Fml
He is an alright teacher, but the midterms and final are extremely tough and tricky. Lectures don't really prepare you for them, so must do the practice ones over and over again. You do however get free points by basically attending lecture and experiments. There is a difficult curve at the end of the course too. Overall hard class! :/
Sonstelie is an ok guy. His lectures are mandatory because he uses iClickers. Participation is basically attending section where you do experiments. Homework is based on those experiments. You learn how to do the actual work through the textbook. Learn the key concepts early because the material gets added on to it. Good grade=intense studying.
He's pretty good, except sometimes he makes things more complicated than they should be. The icky-sounding grading curve actually matches up with regular grades or curves to your advantage, so there is nothing to be afraid of if you study correctly.
Teacher was funny and tried to be engaging, but the class is hard. You must know the concepts very well and do the practice problems and tests online to succeed. If you study hard, you'll be fine. 3 midterms, one final, participation, experiments, and homework.
Extremely hard class! Extensive textbook use, lecture attendance, and tons of studying and practice problem completion is required to succeed. Sonstelie was fairly interesting and tried to be engaging but I learned more that was needed to succeed from CLAS and practice problems than I did in section or lecture.
This class was the crown jewel in my economics education at UCSB. If you're looking for a truly thought-provoking course, this is it. If you're looking for an "easy A," look elsewhere. This class requires a lot of work, but it is a truly gratifying intellectual endeavor.
