She really has it all: family, career, literally wrote the book for the class. Too bad her lecturing is so fast it's difficult to keep up with her during class. Definitely utilize CLAS, and I recommend reading rather than trying to keep up with the ridiculous lectures. Only reason to go is the chance she'll bring her Great Pyrenees dog to class.
For her tests, do all the assigned book problems, and you will see very similar problems from the book on her tests. She will not pull any surprises on you. With that said, do book problems and do not fall behind at all because there is too much information. Going to class is useless unless you read the sections she is teaching about in advance.
Her lectures are not really helpful but since she wrote the book the class is really straightforward, just do the book problems and the exams are pretty much the same as the book problems. But there's little to no curve so you really have to step it up to learn the material (read the book!) and go to clas or something.
If you do not want to learn organic chemistry, but want to work really hard for an A (anyone can get an A, no curve), take Bruice. By far the worst professor I have had in terms of actually teaching how to do chemistry; she lectures straight from the book, so use that, and go to CLAS! Again, if you actually want to learn chemistry, do not take her.
Paula is not as bad as ppl say. She covers more material than others, but her tests are easy and require little to no critical thinking. No surprises. Lecture is unnecessary and only helpful if you have read the book. If you don't read the book on time you will fail the course. Her book is the best textbook in any subject.
109B is the most difficult class of the 109A-B-C series. However, I never went to a lecture, other than for exams, of course, and still got an A just by doing textbook problems. She is very fair and if you do the bookwork you will do well. No tricks on the exams. But you need to do the work.
I never went to class because she literally just reads the textbook off of a powerpoint. The class is a lot of work; make sure you do all of the problems in the book and go to CLAS. She pulls all her problems out of the book so make sure you understand them. She says she doesn't curve the class at all but I got a 78% in 109B and a B in the class.
One of the worst professors I've ever had. Cares more about her dogs than her students. Reads in her whiny boring voice off a powerpoint the entire lecture. Doesn't teach, rather outlines her book then expects you to memorize every mechanism and amino acid structure in the chapters covered. You'll do well if you spend all your time wrote memorizing
If you really "need" an A in O-Chem (for Med school) Bruice is the best prof to take for this series, since theoretically everyone can get an A (no bell curve). It requires A LOT of effort before each exam, but her tests are simple if you know the book chapters extremely well. If you put 90-100% effort in the series, you will very likely get an A.
Bruice is a fairly unapproachable professor who does not teach the material so much as recite it. If you have the option please don't take her class.
She's a pretty monotone professor, but she wrote the book she uses and follows it to the letter, so treat that book like your Bible, and do ALL of the practice problems. Sign up for CLAS too, that really helped me.
She is a decent lecturer, but the material of the class is hard. Read all of the chapters and do all of the homework assignments on her syllabus. She drops your lowest midterm grade which helps but the class is still pretty hard.
Excellent professor, but not an easy one. Felt like I learned a ton from this course. Read every page of the first 10 chapters and did all the in text problems and it was reflected in my grade. Very fair, but requires a lot of time. READ THE BOOK
Decent professor -- obsessed with her book so if you read that you will be fine. Bruice made me realize that I no longer wanted to be a chemistry major, but that shouldn't reflect poorly on her. All the exams are reasonable; none of the questions are especially difficult but the quantity is very high.
Best professor I've had at UCSB. LOVED HER! People who rate her poorly were probably the students who didn't put effort into her class. She's challenging in the best way possible. Her tests are completely fair and if you study her textbook and understand the concepts in it, you'll do great on her tests. Highly recommend her!
After one year, I realized that 109B was my only enjoyable quarter. It was the only quarter we didn't have bruice as a teacher. Only because we actually had to learn the material instead of memorizing a bunch of useless crap. This class is definitely meant for bio majors, who are used to doing that stuff. Got an A+ all three quarters nonetheless.
this teacher is ridiculous avoid at all costs, she "covered" 12 chapters for 109C. someone needs to let her know that it's not a race and slow down to really get the material down instead of trying to cover 1.5+ class worth of material.
I love her!My favorite professor at UCSB. She made me love ochem! She can go through lectures quickly, but she wrote a great book. Just read the book and do all the problems and you'll be fine. She will recycle old test questions and questions from the book so make sure you do book problems! There's no curve, but practicing helped me get an A!
Lecture is unhelpful if you don't read the book ahead of time. DO BOOK PROBLEMS AND STUDY OLD EXAMS. She reuses questions like no other. CLAS also helps a lot too. She's really condescending in class if you don't know the answers to her questions so I eventually stopped going. Just read the book and go to CLAS and you'll be fine.
Extremely difficult class. There's a lot of material covered in too little time, so she lectures fast. She follows the book closely because she wrote it. Do not get behind or it'll be easy to get lost quickly. Attendance is not mandatory, & she records all of her lectures so you can watch them online if you need to. There is no curve.
I stopped going to lecture about 3 weeks into the quarter. Her lectures are pointless considering how unreasonably quick she flies through material. And yes, she does seem a bit arrogant right off the bat. Tough class, no doubt. You get what you put in. Read the book and learn to love it. That will be your grade-how well did you understand the book
No reason at all to go to class. Her slides are pictures of the text she wrote. Questions are straight out of the book, you will never be tested on something you havent seen. It will KILL your time but worth taking her over someone else.
Not helpful or happy.
Don't waste your time going to lecture, just study the textbook for an A in the series.
