She LOVES multiple-choice tests. I guarantee you that every other question, if not every, has D) allnone of the above. You must read if you want to do well. She expects you to keep up with the readings. I skimmed for the midterm & got a C-. Read my butt off & pulled all nighters for the final, managed to get a C+. Not sure why but definitely read!
This class is great. There are no assignments and the final & midterm are super easy. You have to go to some dance shows & the tickets are like $20 or less, which kind of sucks. Overall, it was the easiest A I've ever gotten and pretty enjoyable even though Carol is kind of spastic.
I've take ballet for 12 years and this class was honestly just too easy. If you have any background at all in dance you'll recognize names, dates, and forms of dance. Otherwise just to the readings and you'll be fine. There are just two tests (multiple choice) and they're pretty straightforward. Overall, super easy GE, and Press is great.
This class is super easy, if you read. Going to lecture is helpful too because a lot of the info she talks about in class shows up on the tests. Only 1 midterm and 1 final. Barely any lecturing in class, I think 85% of the time we watched videos in class. Overall very boring but easy. Carol Press is really weird but in a bad, annoying way.
You have to go to class for iclicker points, but are allowed to miss up to 3. She tends to take the importance of her class too far, and does not seem to realize most people just take it to fulfill the art requirement. Trying to talk with her or with her assistant is difficult because they tend to be condescending.
Carol Press shares a genuine passion for the subject, which in turn makes lectures much more fun and engaging. She also genuinely cares about her students. She wants the class to do well. All you have to do is: 1. show up to class (iClicker questions daily) 2. take good notes from what she says 3. read the textbook 4. keep on openmind
Lectures were interesting and are mandatory due to iClicker questions. There was "required" reading but I didn't even buy the book. Borrow it from the library and skim the pages she mentions in class. Having to pay for the 4 required dance shows is a bummer but they were all interesting. I enjoyed this class. Easy midterm and final
I absolutely loved this class! I'm a Biology major so taking an easy non-Bio class every once in a while is important to me. This class was so relaxing. There was a video on some type of dance almost every lecture. One midterm, a final and both are completely multiple choice. Attendance is mandatory because of iClicker but worth it!
Carol can be sweet but she can be a little wacky, to say the least. She's very passionate about not allowing phones in class (although everyone still uses them). Easy class, overall. skimmed the textbook 1 day before the midterm and the final and still got an A.
I always heard people say "Dance 45 is such an easy A, take it!" Well, it's not. It's difficult to figure out what's important from what she says in lecture and the exam questions are pretty tricky because of the d)all of the above option. I went to every single lecture, all the shows, and read all of the chapters and still ended up with a lousy B
Press is a great professor, however, this class is not an easy A as it used to be. Even after doing all the readings more than once, some parts of her tests are confusing, mainly due to the precise wording. Spending almost $100 in concert tickets and sitting through all the concerts only to answer a few questions on each test is ridiculous.
Press isn't too hard, she's just strict. She's pretty easy to decode :if she says something multiple times, highlight it, if she says to know/read something, do that. The book is hard to get through but my final grade was way better than my midterm because I read it. Read the book and try to put up with her attitude, you'll get an A.
if I could go back and not take this class I definitely would... not a great lecturer. and uses iclicker as an attendance checker rather than a learning device. also the class costs over $100 (winter 2014) for the books and the mandatory dance concerts which sucks. pretty easy class though
Carol Press is awesome! She is very approachable and nice. Easiest class ever however must do all the readings. Her questions on the tests are easy if you have done readings. iclicker makes attendance mandatory and must attend 3 dance shows which cost money.
I took this class because it was apparently a chill, easy class. Unfortunately the professor changed up her class to make it much harder this quarter. You will also have to waste 60 dollars on tickets for concerts. If you are still looking for a chill class to take, look somewhere else.
The class is not hard if you actually read the textbook. Attendance is mandatory. The professor is eccentric but well-meaning. I found the subject to be interesting but lecture can get boring. Don't expect to put little effort in the class and get an A though.
She has made this class harder than previous quarters, but if you actually do all of the readings and attend lecture it is still pretty easy. the exams are straightforward as long as you take the time to learn about the material.
Attendance is mandatory b/c of iclicker points. There are 3 mandatory concerts, each I think $20. You need transportation to state street for the first two. She changed up the class this quarter, only using the Dancing book. Midterm was easy. She puts at least 3/4 questions about the concerts and the rest are from the book.
Dr. Press is the most annoying professor I've ever had. Her jokes are not funny at all, but unfortunately you have to go to class because of the iclickers. Other than that, the class is fairly easy and you can get a good grade if you do the readings.
Carol was an amazing professor. I am terrible at dancing and have almost no interest in it, but her passion and weirdness made the class interesting! It was probably my favorite all quarter. She is extremely organized and on top of grades and powerpoints. EASY A if you put in about an hour before the test to read over your class notes. go to class
She is quirky and weird....She made this class harder this year because she found out that everyone was saying how easy it was. Still recommend taking it as a GE but don't expect an easy A. Make sure you do ALL the readings cuz there are weekly quizzes which aren't too bad. Lecture is boring and iClicker errday.
She's really caring and wants to be interactive with her class. She walks down aisles while lecturing and makes sure no one is clicking anyone else in as well as making sure people aren't on their phones. She's prety ditzy and kinda weird but it's not a bad thing.
Least stressful class I have taken at UCSB. Dance performances are expensive but enjoyable. Offers a midterm and final study guide. There are no trick questions. A fair class, take it for GE's and you will not be disappointed.
Dr. Press is pretty irritating and her powerpoint slides are so grammatically incorrect that they are impossible to understand... she flips through the slides way too quickly. But if you just do the readings in the reader, take the quizzes and do the i-clicker in class you'll do fine. Concerts are inconvenient, expensive and annoying.
