I took the class pass no pass and did not pass. I had 100 in literally everything besides the midterm and the final but Press makes her exams worth basically your entire grade. SO much reading it's almost impossible to keep up, the test questions are NOTHING what she talks about in lecture. I thought it would be a good GE, it wasn't!! DONT TAKE!!!!
Her lecture slides do not give much information about what will be on the exam. Exam graded heavily on small details in the textbook. Her questions can be tricky. A lot of "Both A and B" or "All of the above" answers. I don't find her lecture very helpful for the exam. But her class do not have homework but have to pay $40 to watch two concerts.
This class is pretty easy if you put in the effort. I didn't read as often as I should have due to other course load but if I payed a little more attention it could have been an easy A. I recommend taking if for a GE. Got to go to some concerts outside of class ($20 each, mandatory) and they were pretty cool. Carol is enthusiastic and passionate.
Press is very passionate and enthusiastic about dance history and culture. She can scratch some students the wrong way since she is very strict and perfectionistic. Tests are either you ace with flying colors or you fail -- you must read the book and know all the terms if you want to do well. Still a solid choice for the art GE.
Easy GE. You definitely need to read the book and go to class, her lectures are fine, videos take up more than half the time. The concerts are kind of a pain, but not that big of a deal. Tests are easy but weighed heavily, if you don't do good on the tests you won't do good in the class (the final is worth 50%). Don't take the exams lightly. STUDY!
A relatively easy GE in terms of tests which are based off memorization of the textbook/readings. I recommend reading a chapter a week and taking intense, detailed notes on each chapter, so you can review them in preparation of the midterm and final. Your grade is mostly one midterm (30%) and one final (50%), so you have to do well on both!
Class is too much work for an arts GE. Don't read, you don't pass. Midterm and final are multiple choice and are all reading based. Reading is a drag.
The class is graded on 4 things: iClicker attendance (10%), attendance of dance concerts (10%), Midterm (30%), Final (50%). Concerts do end up being a bit pricy, around $20 per concert and spring quarter we attended 4 total. Though some say reading the textbook is optional, I found it a necessity to fully understand the material. Easier w/ reading.
1 midterm, 4 concerts (around $80 total), iclicker for attendance (3 lowest scores dropped), 1 final. Lecture notes are not posted online so you have to go to class. Assigned reading but not totally necessary to read to do well in the class. Not a bad choice for an easy GE, especially if you have some background in dance.
This is probably the worst professor I have ever had. She knows most people come into the class expecting to be given an A as a GE, so she makes her harder for no apparent reason. First day of class, she made a few comments against biology majors. Avoid at all costs.
Easy A. The professor's kind of irritating regarding cell phone and laptop use during class and she walks up and down the aisles throughout lecture. I thought she was pretty unorganized and the TA gave better lectures than her. Textbook helps with studying, but is not necessary. Just show up to lecture and put in a little effort.
Boring, but doable. Just go to lecture, stay awake, take notes, and you'll get a B at worst. Don't buy the textbook, just a money vampire.
Easy A. The only two tests in the class are the midterm and final. If you want to get an A, read and go to class. Also, there is no writing. Overall, you won't have to put too much effort into getting an A.
The lectures are not well organized so it may be a bit difficult to follow. You have to read the book, pay attention to details in performances and videos shown in lecture. If you want an A you must work for it! The professor seems to favor the dance majors in the course
Midterm/final have annoyingly few questions which means missing a couple is a big deal. They're not very balanced and don't accurately reflect what she emphasizes in lecture. Honestly, take the class P/NP (it's 4 units w/o a section unlike MUS15), go to maybe one concert, do OK on exams (quizlet), go to class once in a while and have a chill class
There is a video almost every lecture. They're sometimes boring (depending on how interested you are in dance), although I highly recommend taking notes on them! There is a chapter of reading assigned every week. It's not heavy reading but I recommend taking mild notes, especially on the sections/dancers she points out in class.
This class is best described as a history class about dance bc you will have to memorize names, dates, and terms. Her powerpoints are very vague so take good notes based on her lectures, videos, and the reading which will make studying for the midterm and final much easier. If you do the reading and pay attention, class should be no problem.
Can't say much because I took this class on a PNP basis, but I do want to say that she is very passionate about dance. Great lecturer, although sometimes her powerpoints were disorganized and relied too heavily on videos to convey messages. Also, don't take the midterm and final too easily.
Taking this class was one of the silliest things I've ever done. This class requires you to attend several dance concerts (all of which costing $15+), read several hundred pages, and go to class for iclicker questions. Don't be misled, this is not one of those classes you can not show up to all quarter and then cram the night before and get an A.
She makes you sit the in the lecture hall the entire time to the last minute of class. She doesn't allow you to take pictures of the powerpoints and she speaks really fast at times. She is an okay teacher overall and the midterm and final were really easy. She shows lots of dancing videos which can put you to sleep.
If you're a dance major taking this class it's the easiest class ever because she helps you with the midterm and final. If you're not a dance major and are taking this class, make friends with one who is.
Press seemed a little uptight, but you'll never have to interact with her. Participation is 10% of your grade, so you have to go to class. The class is two multi choice tests, participation, and being present at two dance shows. The class should be an easy A if you do 15 minutes of reading a week. I can't believe people actually got less than an A
GO TO CLASS AND READ. THERE ARE ICLICKER POINTS. SHE'S VERY FEISTY.
Easy class. Noncumulative exams. I sat and read each half of the text before each exam, got A's. If you're good at guessing and test taking and go to class, you might not even need to read. Required dance concerts are interesting I guess. Probably the best easy GE at UCSB.
