I was nervous about taking a speech class and he made it so that everyone was comfortable delivering speeches. The book required does help with the speech process. I feel lucky to have been able to take this class and i learned a lot. Im no longer terrified of getting up and speaking in front of the class. Totally recommend, you will love him.
I hated this class. He always used fancy words to make himself sound smarter when all he was doing was making lecture more complicated. He was never there on Fridays...he always played a movie. It won't matter if you skip that day because as long as you have notes on the movie than you are fine...but the movies will be on test. Go to section!
really liked
I know a lot of people hate him, but I like him personally. I agree that he's not a good teacher though. If you get to know him personally (which I did), then you'll see he loves to help his students. It doesn't matter now since he left UCSB.
Horrible professor. Hes rude, out of line on most of the things he says, and uses ridiculously large words that usually dont make sense to the sentence. DO NOT take his class....
this guy uses big/"smart" words and expects everyone to know it. Fairly easy class though.
Basically an unorganized class. There was no system of attendance, tests, or papers...Just had to go to class and do the readings. The whole grading system was based on "surprise writings" assigned within the class time...which he graded hard on. I will never take him again!
i thought this class was really easy. i barely read at all and got an A-. hes a good teacher and he repeats a lot of stuff so if you miss a lecture its easy to get back on track. his tests were so easy- basically verbatim from what he says in class. just go to lecture and you'll be fine!
WORST TEACHER EVER. seriously, so bad.
I don't know why people keep posting that he is such a terrible professor. Lectures CAN be boring, but overall, they were alright. The tests were extremely easy. Basically,if you do the readings, study a little bit,and attend lecture, you'll get an A. If you only attend lecture and study a little, you'll get a B.
I stopped wanting to be an Anthro major because of him. He grades unfairly and is mean to students in class.
The way he graded the midterm and final was unfair, he changed the grading system halfway into the quarter. i do not recommend taking this course.
Course material was amazing, Hines is straight garbage. If you read and participate in section you learn something worth while. I thought it was hard because I couldn't attend all the lectures and thats all the midterms and final are based on, which is a shame becuz the txt book is interesting and his format makes you not want to read it.
not a class to get an easy a. requires a lot of work but it is an interesting class to take. take notes on what he says than what's on the slides. i would suggest taking something else but it is easy as long as you know the material really well and use "big" anthro vocab
Hines is a terrible teacher. He tries really hard to be wordy and when you point that out he acts like he is just too smart for you to understand. Definitely an arrogant young prof. Tests were so easy they were a joke but I learned nothing and was bored at lectures. Don't take Hines. I hope he doesn't get allowed to teach future quarters.
Worst professor EVER! On his tests, you have to quote him word for word. It's not enough to have the right answer! So if you want to succeed, don't take the class. But if you must, then go to every lecture and copy verbatim what he says--even the stupid made-up words.
Compared to the terrible complaints from students last quarter, this quarter was cake. Hines has definitely eased up on grading so harshly, and after a while his made up words and arrogance becomes hilarious
Professor is a little nuts. Likes to make up words and thinks he is always right. The content is really interesting and has been helpful in two of my other classes this quarter. Overall I would suggest taking this class if you are majoring in something in the social sciences
For Anthro 2: You only need to read from "In Search of Self Respect, and "Conformity and Conflict", if you go to ALL of the lectures. Write down what he says word for word, and don't miss a class. The lecture notes and some of the stories are all that is on the tests. If you do this-Easy class.
He's so pompous and arrogant and too full of himself. It makes me sad that he teaches the intro. to anthro class for those aspiring anthro majors because he totally kills it. I didn't want to be a major, I just thought it would've been an interesting class, but with his teaching, I hated it.
i took this class and got A's on the 1st 2 midterms and the writing assign, participated in section and did "better than average" (according to the TA) on my final and still ended up with a B. apparently he doent use +s or -s but doesnt tell anyone that (suprise suprise) i sat all the way in the back, we all just laughed at his vocb the whole time
lectures mandatory, take VERY detailed notes because his tests are word for word from notes, uses ridiculous vocab, difficult tests, interesting material, worth taking i recommend it
there was no midterm or a final. He would assign readings and talk about them in class. Randomly he would give you one minute to have you write about something on paper and turn it in. That was all the class was graded upon. He was intelligent, but pretty close minded. Hard to get a good grade.
Hines is hands down the worst professor i've had so far. He is condescending and tries to use big words just to make you feel inferior (but ends up creating his own words...uncomfortableness?!). His grading policy is anything but lenient. Coming in with a strong interest in the subject, Hines has made me never want to take another anthro class.
