Film and Media Studies - FAMST

Examines the cinema of contemporary protest, tracking successive waves of revolt from the 2011 Arab Spring to recent uprisings in Eastern Europe, East Asia, and the Middle East. We trace a spectrum of moving-image practice, from anonymous citizen footage and mobile livestreams to festival documentaries and dramatic features, treating protest footage as at once evidence and artifact. Throughout, the course asks who gets to document an uprising, whose visibility is claimed and whose is withheld, and how facial recognition, surveillance, and digital forensics now reshape events and their representation. Students complete an original research project analyzing the visual record of a single movement.

Prerequisites: Film studies 46 or upper-division standing, and consent of instructor.
