This course examines the rise of Hip Hop music as a predominant form of social, political, and cultural expression for African descended peoples in the diaspora. It begins with an analysis of African musical and discursive forms, then explores the emergence of Hip Hop in Black, Caribbean, and Latinx populations in NYC before focusing on the ways in which this Diasporic form has taken on unique expression on the African continent itself.

DO NOT take this class. it was so bad. lecture is so hard to follow. section involves you all sitting in a circle talking about the readings and you have to participate bc its 30% of your grade. also fully depends on your TA. should not be so hard for a GE. I withdrew bc I was fed up.

Professor Ware is a good lecturer. Not too much reading, but lecture heavy. However, when I told him I was uncomfortable with something he said, he shut me down with “I'm right and you're wrong, here's the evidence," which was blatantly heavily biased. He constantly spews his political views into lecture. Would not take again.

Great lecturer; the class format keeps it interesting, especially since he presents most of the lecture content with minimal slides and a greater emphasis on oral/visual lecturing. Definitely a class that isn't difficult if you give some effort and interest. There is a focus on the readings and other content to stay up to date with the course.

Great lectures, but you have to take notes yourself (slides don't help.) Exams not difficult and he made the class easier than syllabus initially said. Makes average at least 85-88% on all exams (no curve down) so A doable. A little bit hard to predict what comes day by day but overall manageable class.

The material was very easy and very interesting. I'm not the biggest history person and yet I found myself so intrigued by the info. There was two midterms and a final both are SAQ and matching (definition to word/person). There was weekly reading but I did just fine by skimming it. He is a bit of a character and sometimes says out of pocket things

Professor Ware makes it easy to get an A if you are willing to put in a little effort. He is very outspoken, so if you are sensitive to opinions, both radical and nuanced, maybe not the right choice. For me, his lectures were fascinating and entertaining. He blends historical lecture with a daily political rally. Worth taking just for that.
