Using the computational power of a computer has become central to the many fields - modern statistics , data science, machine learning, deep learning, artificial intelligence etc. In this course students develop a working knowledge of modern computational statistics applicable to data science, machine learning, deep learning. Students will develop an understanding of how computers are used to do statistics and why these methods work. This will enable effective use of methods of computational statistics in applications. We will use R programming language.

PSTAT194CS . 1 Year, 5 Months Ago

Ravat set up this course in a good way, hit on the application of a lot of Comp. Stats topics, and brushed over the proofs as well, but the application is what was tested. Pace of the course was relaxed, and the projects were interesting. It was hard to ask her questions about the material though; and course structure wasn't clear. TA was clutch.

PSTAT194CS . 1 Year, 5 Months Ago

My favorite class in UCSB! Dr. Ravat designed a great course on Monte Carlo Methods & Social Network Analysis. Great class to have a few hands on projects and connect with other classmates. She even planned out a career panel and brought in data scientists who worked in NASA, Amazon, and JPMorgan. Take it if ever offer again! Easy & Fair Grading!

PSTAT194CS . 3 Years Ago

This was my 2nd class with Dr. Ravat, and it was a much better experience than 120A. She is unorganized and releases too many directions for homework/projects etc. However, she cares about students' success and wants them to leave her 194CS class with the skills to do well in real-life jobs. I would recommend 194CS with her, but not 120A.

Personally I think Uma Ravat gets a bad rap. Of the 7 professors I've had in the PSTAT dept she is 1st or 2nd for quality of instruction. 120A is a weeder course. It is not supposed to be easy. 194CS is an Upper Division Statistics class. It requires substantial work outside of class. Follow the hw submission instructions and Pay attention. ywbf

PSTAT223C . Ludkovski M 3 Months Ago

223C with Ludkovski was a great class. It balanced computational methods and the underlying theory extremely well. While the homeworks were very difficult and strictly graded, I learned immensely from his criticisms. They were great practice at testing both my understanding of the theory and my skill with implementing the methods.

The grading criteria was confusing to me personally.
