This course surveys a range of Asian performances across a diversity of locations, from the traditional theater forms of Japanese Kabuki, Indonesian Wayang Kulit, and Indian Kathakali to modern forms in India and Japan to contemporary Chinese performance art. Theater forms like Chinese Jingju and Japanese Noh will prompt us to reevaluate what the performer does in rehearsal and in situations on and off the stage. By exploring recent modern and contemporary performance forms, we will reassess how an actor, dancer, or puppeteer can challenge the status quo and effect change. As we ask these questions, we will situate Asian performance within social, political, and historical contexts to understand its rich functions and significances.

Perfect GE, took this while taking 2 hard major courses and it gave me a chance to do well in both. One zoom section and about an hour or 2 of work a week. The content that I did learn was fairly interesting compared to other arts courses I've taken. So if you do want to learn about asain theater you could put more time into this course.

was asynchronous, had weekly meetings for section, was super easy, good discussions, actually interesting content, weekly quiz (super easy), weekly postings about a video or reading, 1 bigger project that you build throughout the 6 weeks, can be about any asian solo performance you want, was graded very leniently. feedback was very good too. :D

TAs are kind and grade very generously. There is no midterm, just weekly online quizzes and paragraphs each week. Go to lecture and write down everything on the slides for the quizzes. You only need to do the primary readings. Final at the end is in essay format but hopefully you should have a near 100 in the class that you won't have to worry.

Short quizzes every week, but if you go to class and take notes, you will do well on these quizzes. The paper assignment is not bad, TA's are also very helpful. Many readings but most of them are fun to read. Overall, a enjoyable class for GE and you can actually learn things for Asian performance forms.

Easy class if you write down everything presented on slides during lecture. Make sure to at least read the plays. readings that provide background on a performance aren't as important. Try to relate what is learned in lecture to how it is exhibited in the reading. Make sure to do all the assignments as they can be easy to forget to do.

Dr. Nakamura is so friendly and sweet. The content of the course that is covered is also very interesting. There is A LOT of reading to be done in order to get a good grade in the class but most of the reading is quite interesting. Short quizzes every week, midterm essay, and the final were not that bad though! Highly recommend her and this course!
