Prof. Gaulin is extremely passionate & invested in the class. He is very helpful during office hours and defines one topic many different ways which helps with understanding. If you pay attention in his lectures you'll probably do well.
Prof. gaulin is a cool dude but the class os awful
Iclicker is optional, if you do it those points go to your final and midterm, but NOT WORTH IT. He posts his lectures online (BORING, recommend speeding them up) & just answers questions in class. Tons of extra credit opportunities, I did one, bombed midterm, aced weekly homeworks (use examples from textbook!), and still wound up with an A.
He is a good teacher, there is no reason why you shouldn't get an A in his class. He asks you questions that really tests your knowledge of the material. With that in mind, don't take the class if you are not willing to put in the work,
Gaulin is a perfectly nice guy, and really seems to know his stuff. I don't like this class though because there are too many things that you have to keep up with. You have to go to class, watch his online lectures, do the readings, and do the homework. It is just too much for a GE.
You have 4 different places you need to take notes from: his textbook, online lectures, in class lectures, and online articles. You also have weekly "problem sets" as if the notes load wasn't large enough. The tests are all based on his opinions so good luck! 0/10 IMHO
Lecture is useless bc he only uses it to answer questions people had about the online lectures, nonetheless iclicker so I recommend attending. reading and hw are interesting. For exams study practice exams, hw, online lectures and it should be hard for you not to get an A. My gpa is a 2.95 and I got an A+, so I think that says something.
Professor Gaulin is a well-respected genius. He is so passionate about his subject and not in an annoying way. He clearly wants his students to succeed and is extremely helpful during office hours. I dropped in on his office hours during a time that I thought was his allotted office hours times but wasn't. He took me in anyway. Such a great man!
He (video) lectures online so actual lecture attendance is optional, all he does is answer questions posed by the students via GauchoSpace. I passed the class without ever reading the book (that he wrote). Grade is based on the final, midterm, and weekly homework.
Most Useful to Least Useful: Textbook In Class Lectures Recorded Lectures The book, which he wrote it, is actually quite interesting, and to make sense of lectures in class, keep up with reading. The reading is of reasonable length, but don't procrastinate. Recorded lectures are often not worth watching. Do the 10% extra credit - easy A!
I found the class to be boring, but it wouldn't have been too bad if I had put in a little more effort
Many think Gaulin's class is difficult, but it's just that the material can be confusing sometimes. Most of it is pretty straightforward if you do the readings/watch the online lecture modules. Getting clarification from your TA is helpful. The material itself is interesting and relatable. In-class lectures are pointless and unhelpful though.
Honestly, the class isn't that bad if you put the work in. Readings are absolutely necessary if you don't want to watch most of the video lectures, and going to class helps as he addresses main concepts and student questions. I wouldn't recommend taking it as a GE unless you're interested in the subject. Final replace Mid if your grade is higher.
His lectures are brilliant. He is very funny, in a restrained, academic sort of way. Due to the nature of the material, provocative questions often come up regarding the nature of human behavior, and he gives thoughtful answers each and every time. He was one of the reasons why I decided to double-major in Anth, so you know he's one of the best.
Prof Gaulin is an enthusiastic teacher & really cares about his field of study. He gives great in depth info about evolution, which is really cool even though you're not a Bio Anth major. TA sections are amazing & textbook content is eye-opening. Watch out for those problem sets though, gives extra credit but is a pain if procrastinated upon.
The lectures are a little boring. Just bring other homework for when it's really slow. 2 ways to grade, so you can skip lecture if you test well. I read the chapters, and forwent the online lecture unless I needed clarification. Tests are fine if you know the material well. You DON'T need a strong bio background, the class is more about concepts.
Professor cant speak clearly, and a lot of online videos to watch. It's boring, monotone, and difficult. He doesn't teach material in class, he only answer questions given by students online and as a result he couldn't answer them clearly at all. DONT TAKE THIS COURSE UNLESS ITS NECESSARY, OR YOU WILL REGRET IT.
I took this class in spring quarter for major requirement and it turned out to be the WORSE class experience I have ever had. Lecture is not taught in class, but you have to watch modules (videos) at home. Those can take up to an hour and more. Extra credit is offered, but that does not matter when what is tested is tough like rock.
The course material is actually interesting, the professor is the most boring person on campus. He rambles a lot and the homework is a lot of reading and watching hour long videos of him talking extremely slow. Also, there are problem sets you have to do and mandatory research participation. The course overall really sucks.
Gaulin posts his lectures online and they go on forever. I get so happy to see the one's that are 30 minutes long because his longer ones put me to sleep. You might be confused so you'll ask him a question but he leaves you more confused. Maybe it was just me but i didn't like the guy.
Gaulin rambles throughout his lectures without giving any clear information. You ask a question and then you aren't really are if you ever received an answer. Even worse, you still have to go to lecture because there are iClicker points. The textbook isn't bad and the diagrams are helpful.
don't take as a GE. You have to watch online lectures of him talking with a monotone voice, and on top of that you have to go to lecture to listen to him talk because he takes iclicker attendance. it is not worth it unless you are interested in the subject matter.
Pretty good teacher
I really liked Professor Gaulin. He is super into the subject and I actually did like his style of teaching. You are expected to watch lecture modules beforehand and then he discusses student submitted questions and important topics in class. He provides ample opportunity for extra credit. If you give a slight effort, plus EC, you can get an A.
