Very vague on grading and disorganized but you can tell she's extremely passionate about what she teaches and has a great sense of humor. Had her for HIST9 (a seminar), so there's likely some difference in her regular courses. Queen
She truly cares for her work and her students. She may be a bit disorganized but always makes up for it with extensions and opportunities for rewrites and Office Hours- and she gives great feedback on papers. I would love to take her again, and I'm definitely not a medieval history enjoyer. Graded on three 500-word papers and a ~2000-word final.
Professor Lansing is one of those professors who just loooove their subject, and it shows in her lectures. She really takes the time to answer questions, even silly curious questions, which makes the class really interesting
Loved Professor Lansing's lectures. She is very clearly very knowledgable. The readings were never an unreasonable length, and were always interesting and relevant. Though many in the department are the opposite, Prof Lansing was extremely down to earth, kind, and encouraging while also being challenging. Grading was fair and feedback was abundant.
I really enjoyed taking this class! The difficulty really depends on your TA and their grading style/how strict they are. Definitely attend office hours with your TA for the essay. Some of the readings are really heavy, but divide them up throughout the week and they should be very doable. The final was also really fair.
I enjoyed her enthusiasm and knowledge of the subject. She did get too disorganized at times. Unfortunately, my TA was somewhat harsh and vague towards grading, making the GE class difficult for me. However, Professor tried her best to help me do well in her class, especially by giving specific and helpful feedback for my essay revision.
Good class to fulfill GE requirements, but not a class where it can easily be BS'd. Lansing's a good lecturer. I still went even though attendance wasn't mandatory. There's one essay (annoying bc we only had 2 choices) & reading responses (350) words, but its super doable. The final wasn't hard, but she gave very vague details one what to study.
Lectures are all over the place and when it came to the final every TA was giving out different information as to what was going to be on it...Disorganized course that relies heavily on your TA
The lectures are super fast paced and can feel pretty long at times, but overall if you enjoy history you'll have a good time. TAs are great and are super helpful for the singular essay during the course. Weekly reading assignments with a write-up, so make sure to get those done. Take thorough notes on key people/events to study for the final!
Carol is obviously passionate and knowledgeable about the subject, yet she teaches in a confusing, arbitrary manner. Her lectures often result in tangents, and deadlines for assignments are completely unclear. I would not take her unless you have a STRONG love of Medieval Italian Literature. Grades illegibly, horrible communicator outside class.
I really like Professor Lansing. I am not a history major but I have a fascination with medieval/renaissance history which is Lansing's specialty. She's a fair grader and I believe she will let you rewrite a paper if you got a poor grade on it as long as you visit her during office hours.
Professor Lansing is very knowledgeable and it shows during her lectures. Those who may not be as familiar with the subject can feel somewhat lost but as a history major, I thoroughly enjoyed it. My TA was a bit of a harsh grader and sometimes the essays would fixate on a certain portion of the reading that can be easily missed. Good class overall.
I was scared by the reviews, as I am not a history major. I had to take the class on a whim due to credits. Professor Lansing is a great, well respected Proffesor. Can be a tad fast in lectures but she made it fascinating due to her passion for the subject. I was fearful of the essays (major grade), and was graded fairly, and greatly! I enjoyed it.
I enjoyed this class and Professor Lansing and have since read two additional books covering the Cathar heresies. The readings for this class were well selected and I hope she teaches another section on the period.
I hated this course. "Medieval Scandals" was the title of the course but I felt like I'm done with the class learning absolutely nothing. In regards to Prof. Lansing, she is very nice and the lectures were well done. Perhaps another course by her would have been better, it seems there is no clear lesson plan for this course though.
Great lectures! Goes real into depth and explains everything in an easy way, you have readings for HW but they're not that tedious, her final exam is the only big obstacle. She doesn't give a review sheet and very little prep for it but for me it was a series of short essay responses where you had to ID a series of ppl, and events!
Prof. Lansing knows her stuff when it comes to medieval history. Shes just not effective when it comes to lecturing. Most people I spoke to in this course had no clue what was relevant to the the assignments and exam, she was all over the place and made no linear sense which is important for history. Tough grader, allows rewrite. Ignored my emails
Professor Lansing gives good feedback and her enthusiasm about medieval European history rubs off on you. Had her for a small historical writing class. She is a bit unorganized but overall very knowledgable and entertaining. She can speak too fast at times and get carried off topic but it's actually really endearing.
Prof. Lansing is a nice lady and she's passionate about Medieval Italy, but her lectures are very difficult to follow along with. Definitely go to class and type your notes. The final was quite hard to prepare for because she didn't give much explanation about what to expect. While I respect her and her knowledge, I wouldn't take her class again.
She is not clear in her instructions, final was open to interpretations and was hard to prepare for because it was not specific. Hops around on the lecture powerpoint.
Work really hard on the essays, they're worth a lot! They're also graded pretty harshly, so go into your TA's office hours for help. I've fallen asleep a few times in this class, but she can engage everyone most of the time. The text book is helpful for the essays and exams, but not necessary if you take good notes. Don't skip lectures!
Though you can tell Prof Lansing is incredibly well versed in history, sometimes she cant teach it perfectly. She ends up jumping around often times, but once you learn to follow that it's ok. A lot depends on your TA, and the essays (especially the 2nd) are worth more than your final, so put effort into those. Did not use the book once at all.
There is quite a bit of reading, but nothing too out of the ordinary. Two papers, a written final, and weekly participation paragraphs online. The final was based on all of the lectures, whereas the essays were based solely on a specific document. Great teacher, would take again, but did grade me fairly harshly and did not respond to my emails.
The class was not very interesting despite my being a history major. Lectures tended to be all over the place so it was difficult to keep track of what was actually important to the class. I did not find her to be very helpful and her somewhat sarcastic nature was very unwelcoming.
