LANSING C L
Very vague on grading and disorganized but you can tell she's extremely passionate about what she teaches and has a great sense of humor. Had her for HIST9 (a seminar), so there's likely some difference in her regular courses. Queen
She truly cares for her work and her students. She may be a bit disorganized but always makes up for it with extensions and opportunities for rewrites and Office Hours- and she gives great feedback on papers. I would love to take her again, and I'm definitely not a medieval history enjoyer. Graded on three 500-word papers and a ~2000-word final.
Professor Lansing is one of those professors who just loooove their subject, and it shows in her lectures. She really takes the time to answer questions, even silly curious questions, which makes the class really interesting
Loved Professor Lansing's lectures. She is very clearly very knowledgable. The readings were never an unreasonable length, and were always interesting and relevant. Though many in the department are the opposite, Prof Lansing was extremely down to earth, kind, and encouraging while also being challenging. Grading was fair and feedback was abundant.
I really enjoyed taking this class! The difficulty really depends on your TA and their grading style/how strict they are. Definitely attend office hours with your TA for the essay. Some of the readings are really heavy, but divide them up throughout the week and they should be very doable. The final was also really fair.
I enjoyed her enthusiasm and knowledge of the subject. She did get too disorganized at times. Unfortunately, my TA was somewhat harsh and vague towards grading, making the GE class difficult for me. However, Professor tried her best to help me do well in her class, especially by giving specific and helpful feedback for my essay revision.
Good class to fulfill GE requirements, but not a class where it can easily be BS'd. Lansing's a good lecturer. I still went even though attendance wasn't mandatory. There's one essay (annoying bc we only had 2 choices) & reading responses (350) words, but its super doable. The final wasn't hard, but she gave very vague details one what to study.
Lectures are all over the place and when it came to the final every TA was giving out different information as to what was going to be on it...Disorganized course that relies heavily on your TA
The lectures are super fast paced and can feel pretty long at times, but overall if you enjoy history you'll have a good time. TAs are great and are super helpful for the singular essay during the course. Weekly reading assignments with a write-up, so make sure to get those done. Take thorough notes on key people/events to study for the final!
Carol is obviously passionate and knowledgeable about the subject, yet she teaches in a confusing, arbitrary manner. Her lectures often result in tangents, and deadlines for assignments are completely unclear. I would not take her unless you have a STRONG love of Medieval Italian Literature. Grades illegibly, horrible communicator outside class.
I really like Professor Lansing. I am not a history major but I have a fascination with medieval/renaissance history which is Lansing's specialty. She's a fair grader and I believe she will let you rewrite a paper if you got a poor grade on it as long as you visit her during office hours.
Professor Lansing is very knowledgeable and it shows during her lectures. Those who may not be as familiar with the subject can feel somewhat lost but as a history major, I thoroughly enjoyed it. My TA was a bit of a harsh grader and sometimes the essays would fixate on a certain portion of the reading that can be easily missed. Good class overall.
