CHEM109A . 4 Years Ago

The worst prof I've ever had. Gives zero partial credit on tests and makes them extremely long. Goes twice as fast as the other ochem classes, leaving you 2 chapters ahead of everyone else. Her textbook is full of errors and forces you to teach yourself. Was super rude to me in OH and basically made me feel even worse about a bad midterm grade

She's definitely the greatest professor in UCSB.

I got a 3.8 my 1st year and got a C. Don't have the time to devote my life to ochem but that's what you'll be doing in this class. Say goodbye to die and the DP dream, sell those die on ebay boys. Terrible prof

She should be ashamed of herself. You're basically in charge of learning all the material yourself while she just stands up there. Textbook shouldn't be super necessary but it IS because she doesn't teach and you'll be depending on that thing for your life. I just wouldn't recommend taking her. Not exactly a point in showing up to class

Basically you are teaching yourself everything. Literally everything. If you teach yourself and understand all the book problems and memorize them you will do fine, but it is a lot of stuff. The final was way harder than her midterms. If she asks a question that was not a book problem you are screwed. If you want to actually learn don't take her.

Dr. Bruice has been lecturing at UCSB for decades, and her exhaustion with undergrads shows -- her lectures are fast-paced reviews of the textbook figures and are useful as a way to keep up with the material as one studies from her textbook at their own pace. Her exams are either verbatim book problems or slightly modified ones, easy to succeed on!

This class taught me how to self study. easy test. If you don't do the work you will fail. if you do the work you will get an A.

She's extremely rude and lazy. She just sits in the front of her class and reads off her powerpoint. Theres truly no point in showing up to her class. Stay home, read her book, and memorize all the book problems because she uses exact questions out of the book on her midterms and finals. Again, lazy.

Honestly her lecture was boring and basically she was just reading off her book. But her test was easy

My advice is to do well in this class read the book and go to her lectures (if you already read the section) and use that time as a review session. Her tests are super easy (based off book problems). She is actually pretty nice in OH despite her being cold in lecture. Mastering Chem HW was cheggable. Bruice taught me how to effectively self-study

Worst professor I've ever had. Clicked through powerpoints so quickly and expected students to do every single book problem. I did not learn the material well and would NOT recommend her at all.

Well a lot of people dislike Bruice, so did I in the first couple of lectures since she is so quiet, I had to stare at the ppt and the blackboard the entire time while taking notes. Then I decided to move right next to the podium to hear her better. I stopped taking notes because her lectures were actually great and I learnt than memorize.

Worst OChem/STEM professor on campus. Lectures are not helpful at all, she just reads off slides that are pictures of the textbook. Doesn't explain anything and is not always willing to help during office hours. Only good thing is that tests are easy because they are pulled straight from the book. Grades super tough and doesn't give partial credit.

She doesnt teach at all. She just reads the slides, and she's rude when you ask for help. If you take this class you will be teaching Organic Chemistry to yourself :/

She wrote the text book, and the irony laying here is that she is simply not good at teaching. Have fun with her, people/

Horrible tests. VERY long/detailed, never had time to complete them all with decency. Honestly liked ochem as a subject, not with Bruice though. Talked to some others from Gainer's and didn't seem as bad, go with him if you can. Btw veryyyyy heavy focus on chapt 9 for final. Her book is good, will give her that.

If you want to succeed in OChem with Bruice you have to expose yourself to the information as much as possible. Do all of the book problems at least twice, Go to CLAS. Do her online homework. Understand that if you take this class you will basically be teaching yourself. Lecture can help but its not mandatory. TAs grade SUPER FAST.

What a difference 40 years makes. I took Bruice in 1980. She was one of the most influential Professors during my time at UCSB. In the old days there were black boards and I remember her circling all the chips in the board to memorize so we did not think they were electrons. At the time she received many teaching awards for a very good reason.

Literally reads off her slides. Be prepared to teach yourself by reading the textbook. Ironically, she wrote the book. The textbook is a lifesaver. But the exams arent too bad & should be do-able if you read the book or went for CLAS help.

Bruice is a solid teacher but her lectures are a bigger waste of time than trying to talk a UCSB student out of drinking Yerba. Her tests are pretty straightforward, and if you read and put in minimal effort you will do fine. She is my favorite Ochem professor out of any of them.
