The reviews are, for once, an accurate representation of the professor. Avoid at all costs.
Lectures are pretty much useless except for the mandatory one. Professor Hartman is a lazy instructor. All the dude does in the videos is read off the slides and tries to talk slowly to pretend he is explaining it at a deeper level. At least the TA's videos are a little bit better but get ready to pretty much teach yourself the entire course.
Class isn't too difficult except for the fact that you have to teach it to yourself! Online lectures are so pointless, Hartman doesn't even teach. Final was hard. Don't skip the midterm even though it's only 10%!!
Awful professor. This class will not teach you everything. You're going to have to learn everything on your own. If you can avoid him, please do!
And if you ever take Hartman, well… Good luck Charlie
Get ready to learn everything on your own; I bought the smart work practice questions. That being said, it is just statistics...nothing more and nothing less.
Econ 5, Hartman only appeared in online videos, but oml, I cannot stand the guy. He reads off slides word for word and switches up his tone of voice so that it sounds like he is adding remotely anything of value, while sounding condescending and unintelligent. He sticks his tongue out every 2 seconds. I could go forever but there is a char limit...
Genuinely worst professor I've ever had and I'm writing this with an A in the class. All he does is post lecture videos of himself reading slides. He doesn't teach. Besides for his review lectures which aren't frequent where he is still terrible at explaining anything. He should be getting paid as a TA for the amount of work he puts into our class.
It's John Hartman.
It's Hartman.
One of the worst professors I have ever had. I took AP Stats in high school and the way he explains topics makes even the most simplistic ones confusing. I had him for section, and he constantly spoke down to students, belittling and discouraging them. Teaching yourself the material and doing the practice tests is the best way to do well.
Super easy class until the impossible final that's worth 35% of your grade. If it's Hartman do not take
I got an A in this class because I taught myself EVERYTHING. The professor is lazy and uploads video lectures that are just him reading through the slides. The content is not hard but the class structure makes it hard. Do the practice tests and ask ChatGPT to explain things because the professor won't.
Awful professor that teaches in a completely asynchronous manner, at least for my class. No feedback at all throughout the course and you teach yourself the content.
Econ 5 is not a hard class. Prof Hartman makes it hard. I feel bad for anyone taking this course as mostly every negative review is true. Lectures from 2020, the final is crazy hard, and you're required to do activities once a week with a group. Don't expect to learn anything though, everyone (including TA's) use ChatGPT. Terrible class.
This class is horribly taught. easy statistics, but it is extremely difficult to get a grasp on the material. all online lectures, one mandatory section a week. this class was overall so confusing and the final was one of the hardest tests I have taken at UCSB. just self-study a lot and have Chat explain practice problems.
By far the worst professor I've ever had at UCSB, I wish I could give him a 0/5. Super lazy, super condescending to students. The content itself isn't too bad it's just taught so poorly. My advice to do well, don't buy the textbook, don't watch the lecture vids, just memorize the slides and do every practice exam multiple times.
Lousy course setup. At the beginning of the quarter he'll give a speech about how they've switched the class format to help students learn better, but then the majority of the class is just watching pre-recorded lectures from covid. It's somewhat insulting how little effort is put into teaching students in this class.
Hartman's class is challenging but manageable with practice. The exams are similar to past papers, so using resources like Unstuckstudy and the free textbook can really help with preparation. Attend lectures and office hours to stay on top of the material.
He isn't as bad as people say he is. His lectures are decent and the exams are very similar to past exams. So as long as you stay on task and practice throughout the entire quarter you will be fine.
Hartman's exams are extremely similar to prior final exams (which he gives out). Good professor given how rigorous + fast paced ECON10A is. He sends out Canvas announcements, reminding students about going to OH, Section, and getting help in general. He also offers regrade requests and wanted all of us to succeed (while also putting in the work).
Hartman honestly isnt that bad, he just teaches a hard class and talks with a boring voice sometimes. The practice tests are exactly like the tests. Lectures are helpful if you are lost in the class but they aren't really essential to succeed in this class. If you are decent at calc then youll be fine.
the class itself was not terrible, you just have to self teach and do all the past exams, but he was no help at all. he is an unfair grader and spends most of his time talking about how hard the class is and only reads off lecture slides
I had a good experience w/ Hartman. I love how he provides >60 PAST exams for you to practice (they're EXTREMELY similar to his exams). His test questions were VERY PREDICTABLE & REASONABLE. He also encourages you to study early & is accessible after lectures. The lectures are dense b/c of amount of course content. TAs & CLAS were VERY helpful too.
