The class is not hard at all. There is no need to go to lectures as long as you understand what's happening. Just do the past exams, attend sections, and you will be fine.
I understand that 10A is a weeder class but there is a difference between finding smart students and offering absolutely no help at all. His lectures are pretty much useless for tests. His attitude towards answering emails, students, and just his job in general is really poor. My advice is to do old exams and work with people in the class/ TAs.
As a current member of L&S Honors Program, I persuade you to leave away from this xx as far as u can. John is a politician who constantly tries to sell his manipulation minds and ideas. Browse his slides, u will find out he keeps generating unnecessary pressure and brainwashing you with his set of 'success life' theory. Jesus Christ, Nightmare!
just go to clas and do all past exams and you will be fine
He acts like a politician, when I and my group would ask him questions he would talk forever and not answer our questions. He just spins the question around and makes it impossible to get a real answer from him. For lectures, there are recorded videos. Be prepared to teach yourself, luckily this was a review for me since I took statistics in hs.
Professor Hartman doenst teacher. He is very rude to his students. He has a sense of superiority that is very saddening. He doenst teach the course but rather sends lecture videos. so be prepared to teach yourself. there is not enough practice being applied in this course. the format and approach of this course is not very helpful to do well.
I love Hartman
honestly, hartman tries really hard and does his best, but he's just not very helpful. Its a miracle I passed the class my first time. There is homework every week which is nice so there is not as much weight on the test. Find the smart kid in class, befriend them, and have them teach you everything.
Like many other econ professors in my experience, doesn't really teach. You have to learn the material on your own to do well. Barely ANY in person instruction.. Even the recorded lectures aren't gonna help u do well on the tests-- just do all the practice exams and learn what u don't know through them. Totally possible to get an A if u study hard
Mini quizzes (6%), modules that aren't too bad (7%), stressful class sessions where you have to participate in group projects to get a grade (14%), easy enough excels (28%), and a midterm and very intense final (45%). Study really hard and make sure you understand the practice midterms and finals really well. An A is doable with intense studying.
Horrible teacher. He does not deserve to teach students. He will show you slides and will not help you. Good luck.
Hartman isn't really even teaching the class. His involvement doesn't go beyond reading off of extremely confusing lecture slides and the only way to really learn anything in this class is to go to YouTube and watch people explain the concepts in a more understandable manner. Stay on top of online assignments and cram for exams and you'll be fine.
try your best to avoid any of his class cause taking his class means you have to put in a lot of effort in self-study the course. The way he explains the concepts is very confusing and sometimes you may doubt if he really understands the materials he's teaching. I took his econ 5 and luckily he's not the only instructor or I may fail his class.
this was the worst class i've ever taken at ucsb. there is no structure, the lectures are awful, the tas do not know the material, and there is no one to help you. you are learning everything on your own with no help.
TAKE 10a W/ HARTMAN! I took 10a first with Millner, and I hated every second of that class. I retook it with Hartman and it felt like a completely different class. He explains every lecture slide thoroughly and the class was well structured. Always knew what to expect. He always stopped for questions and took his time to answer all of them.
This class and professor is not as bad as its reputation. Hartman knows the material well and explains the concepts and some examples. The course content is based around a few key concepts, so put in the work and you will be fine. He also offers many old practice exams and practice problems that helped a lot on the challenging tests.
I took this online over the summer and it was hard af, he doesn't know how to teach this class. He barely did any practice problems so when it got to the test I barely knew shit. I took ECON 5 with him too and that was in-person and very hard because it was the same thing, he didn't teach the damn class. I only got a B because I grinded heavily.
Hartman sucks. He reads the words on his slides and doesn't teach anything. There is one required class a week but so many small pointless assignments throughout the week. Always says he's available to answer questions but he never clearly answers them and just goes on a tangent about something I didn't ask about. Scared for the final.
If you can survive from this professor, you can succeed in ANY CLASS!
Very boring class. Doesn't answer your questions.
Doesn't answer your questions. In-class activities way easier compared to the tests. Take the midterm!(it's way easier than the final).
The worst econ professor. Only reads materials in online lecture video without explaining the concept. Literally work-by-word from the slide. So is other professor of this class (Econ 5). The test is relative fair it's just don't try to rely on the lecture videos. Watch the slides and attend CLAS. You will be fine (hopefully).
Don't neglect this class for 10A- you still need a passing grade as an Econ major. This class is easy if you show up and do your work, but beware that the final is difficult.
Hartman says he wants to help students but will deflect any question you come to him with. He encourages students who could do well to drop his course and doesn't seem to care about the well-being of his students. The lectures aren't worth it to attend- you'll get the same information online through the pre-recorded ones. Good luck!
