The class is hard, there is a lot of material but the underlying concepts are really the same. A 72% in the class is a B which is what transfers need to pass. Even then you can take the final twice in order to get in. Frankly, most people don't get in because they aren't studying enough or weak math skill. Practice exams are the name of the game.

This class was super hard because the class is just all tests. If you miss one multiple choice question, you lose 3% of your total grade!! Hartman is a super boring lecturer and hes just a robot that reads off slides. Also you do not need to go to the 5th hour lectures. Just read the slides and you'll be good.

get ready to study, Hartman's doing a good job teaching the class. The questions are very tricky so I suggest doing every old test he posts

Horrible lecturer. Definitely knows the material well but he just reads what's on the slides, so going to lecture isn't helpful. 5th hour was also useless 90% of the time. Reading isn't necessary to understand the material. Do practice tests over and over and understand all the steps and you'll be fine!

Really great guy! At times, funny during lecture but always stressed that the material is going to be hard at first. Lectures covered concepts but not the math based examples or questions we would face on midterms & final. I ended up retaking my final exam twice to get a 92. But self-learning & doing practice exams are a must to get a good grade.

Yeah, 10A sucks and yeah, he's not the most engaging lecturer, but he's honestly pretty fair. Giving us the option to take m2 after Gauchospace was down and making the final optional was thoughtful. His lectures are dry and lack solid practice problems- definitely go to CLAS. The material is hard, but doable if you put in lots of time.

The professor was repetitive every single time at the end of the class. I stopped reading halfway through the class but took HEAVY notes on the PowerPoint slides.

Okay, yes 10a sucks but at least Hartman is not a heartless, evil professor. He kinda grew on me, especially since a) he gave us the option to not take the midterm when Gauchospace went down and b) he cancelled the final due to coronatime. Honestly, the material is super hard- you just have to put in the work

I took 134a with a TA, but Hartman writes most of the source material. This class is SO MUCH BETTER THAN 10A!! Solving problems for this class is like a puzzle, and it is honestly really fun (but that might be because I am an accounting major). Do all of the practice exams and you will be good to go!

just terrible. reads from lecture slides. learned more from CLAS than his class. met more people retaking than first timers. he's more concerned about how difficult Econ10a is rather than teaching it. you'll see other students hating him. seems like his goal is to fail 50% of the class. changed my major cus of him. WORST professor at UCSB. BEWARE!

Hartman explains things pretty well but sometimes goes a bit fast. Either way, lecture slides are available and the book explains well too. He really does care about students doing well in the class.

Never went to lecture or section (seriously). Do each past test at least twice. Read the slides. Read the textbook when you don't understand something. The class is literally all algebra and derivatives. If you have to memorize the formulas, you're studying wrong. Formulas can be derived intuitively. I did poorly in Econ 1 and 2 but got an A in 10A

He gives you everything you need to succeed. It really is up to you to make sure you take advantage of it. Going to his and Ta's office hours is the best thing you can do for your grade. I will say that he is a little unapproachable in office hours, but it's YOUR grade. ASK THE QUESTIONS you want answers to in lecture and office hours.

I am having my 10A final in about three hours, and I am just here to say, please go to CLAS. It will save your life. Hartman is okay. He did pay efforts to make sure everyone understands the material. The grading is indeed harsh but you will be fine if you do all the past exams. Good luck.

Lectures aren't incredibly useful and the class makes you really work for the grade.

hartman really isn't as bad as people say. he could do more to teach students how to solve real problems in addition to conceptual issues. he makes an effort to not hold your hand throughout the course in order to make sure ur worthy of the grade u get. just take advantage of every resource u have and u will succeed 100% M1 48% M2 74% F

Hartman is a very particular professor and demands respect at all times. He needs to get off of his high-horse and transition into a more approachable professor in order to help the Econ department become stronger and more tolerated.

10A covers a ton of material and honestly, if he spent half the time lecturing rather than constantly repeating how difficult the course is, maybe I would've learned something.

The material isn't too bad, its just the way the problems are phrased on exams. I recommend understanding the slides as much as possible, going to CLAS, and doing as many old practice exams as possible. You may not know how to do approach problems at first, but don't worry. You will eventually get the hang of it. Good luck.

He cares alot about his students so much that he forgets how to teach the actual class. Boring lectures, but if you can stay awake it helps. The book will teach you everything and was surprisingly helpful and more interesting than Hartman himself.

Hartman is a caring professor and decent lecturer. Do not buy the book, just study the slides. MT1: 96% with 64% average, MT2: 68% with 72% average, Final: 54% with unknown average. I only needed a C in this course, so I slacked off after the first midterm, but study every day for this class, it is doable. Do every single practice question

Positives: goes into detail with lectures, cares about students, pretty easily accessible, answers questions durin lecture, has extra problem sets and lots of practice exams to practice on. Negatives: very boring lecturer and not very good at explaining material during office hours. Overall: good caring guy, but just doesnt lecture well.

Don't take your anger out on Hartman, the class is hard but not because of him. I thought he was clear but lectures were boring so I didn't really pay attention. Most of my learning was doing practice tests 2-3 times EACH. CLAS and section won't be enough and don't accurately reflect test material. No secret just work hard. MT1 100%, MT2 84%, F 86%

Class was difficult, takes a lot of studying. However, its not impossible and you shouldnt be discouraged. Do practice Midterms/finals and also use CLAS! They have a website for 10A that helped me a lot. If I would have studied some more time and gone to a few more lectures I would have done better. My scores MT1: 84% MT2: 60% Final: 74%
