HARTMAN J L
He isn't as bad as people say he is. His lectures are decent and the exams are very similar to past exams. So as long as you stay on task and practice throughout the entire quarter you will be fine.
Hartman's exams are extremely similar to prior final exams (which he gives out). Good professor given how rigorous + fast paced ECON10A is. He sends out Canvas announcements, reminding students about going to OH, Section, and getting help in general. He also offers regrade requests and wanted all of us to succeed (while also putting in the work).
Hartman honestly isnt that bad, he just teaches a hard class and talks with a boring voice sometimes. The practice tests are exactly like the tests. Lectures are helpful if you are lost in the class but they aren't really essential to succeed in this class. If you are decent at calc then youll be fine.
the class itself was not terrible, you just have to self teach and do all the past exams, but he was no help at all. he is an unfair grader and spends most of his time talking about how hard the class is and only reads off lecture slides
I had a good experience w/ Hartman. I love how he provides >60 PAST exams for you to practice (they're EXTREMELY similar to his exams). His test questions were VERY PREDICTABLE & REASONABLE. He also encourages you to study early & is accessible after lectures. The lectures are dense b/c of amount of course content. TAs & CLAS were VERY helpful too.
I had Harman for Econ 2 and Econ 10A. He reads off the slides and is a boring lecturer. I never understood a single thing he said. I self taught myself the entirety of both courses. For Econ 2, read the textbook as it will cover everything if not more that Hartman touches upon. For Econ 10A, do all of the past exams and you're good.
I've had him a couple times but this is finally the last time. Class grades are mostly test based and you would think that 50-60% test averages would be a sign for him to fix something. Honestly better off not going to lecture since he just reads off the slides anyways. Expected to know way more then whats covered in lecture so keep that in mind.
His tests are always the hardest!!! Never choose him.
Took AP Stats so course was easy BUT if you're NEW to stats, this course is a NIGHTMARE! Recorded lectures & sections are USELESS. Only 1 REQUIRED weekly activity section! You have to SELF-STUDY EVERYTHING!! Instructors @office hours are HORRIBLE at explaining concepts. LOTS of online WEEKLY work! DO THE PRACTICE PRIOR MIDTERM/FINALS TO GET AN A!!!
Sections require group work. Lectures are mandatory with the iClicker. Exams are hard and time-limited. 40 minutes for 32 multiple-choice questions. :( A textbook is required for homework. 4 exams in total, and you can drop the lowest one. (you can skip the final if you want.) You really need to spend a lot of time on this class if you want an A.
10A was so easy with Hartman. explains things clearly and forces you to thing critically about the material which makes you actually learn the concepts instead of just memorizing.
Bunch of small weekly assignments not worth much. One section is mando, rest aren't. Midterm worth 10%, final worth 25%, can not take middy and move weight to final. Lectures are vids and completely useless. Just self study everything, google/chatgpt stuff and don't bother trying to interact with the prof/TAs for help.
