Im a senior and this his class has definitely been one of my favorites at UCSB since I've been here. Really nice guy but also really passionate about what he teaches. Two papers which accounted for most of the grade but I found the papers quite fun to do as the lectures and readings are really interesting and engaging.
My favorite professor at UCSB! Very well-spoken, you can tell how much effort he puts into teaching. He makes extremely confusing topics sound simple. I'm always zoned out in other lectures, but he kept me engaged the whole time. Very accommodating when I was ill and needed an extension, and at the end of the quarter with the COVID outbreak.
Professor Yaqub is a great lecturer and was super accommodating, especially amidst the beginning of the COVID-19 crisis. Really nice guy who makes learning history interesting.
He's very kind, and does his best to make dry material interesting. However, there are many resources that can substitute for lecture. Barron's EZ 101 Study Keys for American history are solid gold. Unfortunately, they make lectures obsolete (and, he posts his slides on Gauchospace anyways). Very, very nice, but lectures aren't that helpful.
Salim is the best lecturer I've ever had. Makes them extremely interesting by adding videos, songs, impersonations, and other things to break the monotony of an hour+ long lecture. Can't recommend him enough. Be sure to study for the final and work hard on your essays! He's a great teacher, but that does not mean he's an easy A.
Prof Yaqub is a great lecturer, and is very adamant about his courses. I've taken three upper-div classes with him and all of them have been interesting and fairly graded. He usually assigns two short (4-5 page papers) in lieu of a midterm (woo!), and the final is very manageable. I highly recommend Prof Yaqub. He genuinely cares about his students
Salim is what more professors should strive to be like. His lectures were amazing and clear, and he constantly used discussions & debates to break up the monotony of long lectures. Because I took his UD course, he allowed us much freedom on the papers to voice our own historical opinions and analysis. Incredible class, and I learned so much.
Prof. Yaqub is one of the best lecturers I've ever come across. Very approachable and accepting of various points of views. He really goes the extra mile to make his classes entertaining by incorporating in-class activities such as debates & movies.Attendance is mandatory (not a problem for me, I loved coming to class) His impressions are awesome!
Dr. Yaqub is a wonderful lecturer. He really takes the time to ensure that his lectures incorporate pictures, video/ sound clips etc to give them a modern touch. Attendance is mandatory but I found no issues attending every lecture. He does allow you to make up for missed lectures. Prof. Yaqub is very each to work with and is very helpful.
Good lecturer, wasn't a fan of the over 80 slides a lecture and lack of outline as someone who handwrites their notes. Eventually, I figured out to jot down what he says and make sense of it later. TA dictates your experience, but if you talk to him, he does listen to some crazy stuff they pull sometimes. Loved talking to him, and passionate guy
Prof Yaqub is a funny guy and I appreciated the video clips, music, and jokes he included in his lectures. Paper instructions and final were straightforward. However, I really didn't like how he read off an outline for the entirety of class. It made it hard to stay awake, and it's a shame since the content's so interesting.
going to lecture is essential, readings are more optional but still helpful for essays. class is heavily dependent on the TA. 2 big papers and a final which he provides a comprehensive study guide for. Yaqub is an AMAZING lecturer, super engaging, talks quickly. great for a GE. $60 dollar course reader but people scan them. love this class.
one of the best professors at ucsb
This professor was very passionate about his teachings which made it easier to follow along. I just feel that your TA will determine whether you have a good experience in the class.
I loved this class. I learned so much valuable information and professor ya in did an amazing job at lecturing and explaining events.
Not a bad class overall. Three main papers throughout the quarter which were easy enough and graded leniently. Participation assignments scattered throughout, mandatory section attendance. Course content wasn't that engaging to someone who doesn't like history, but the lectures were easy to follow and the material was well-presented.
Professor Yaqub is amazing! He is probably my favorite professor at UCSB. While his lecture slides do not contain much information, he is a great lecturer and everything is very straightforward. Yaqub is a fair grader and is also quite understanding of unforeseen circumstances. I definitely recommend his courses!
Prof Yaqub is very passionate about what he is teaching and he is an amazing lecturer. He only grades on two things, a midterm paper and a final which were graded tough, but fair. The class is very reading heavy, but the lecturers pair well with the readings and it is worth it. Learned a lot and enjoyed it!
Prof Yaqub's lectures were very interesting and he took the time to incorporate videos/primary sources into them which made the lecture more involved and captivating. Also posted lectures online, so attendance was optional - however final and midterm papers required citations/evidence from readings and lectures. Would highly recommend this class!
Really great lecturer who makes it interesting by inserting videos. There's a lot of reading but the essays are honestly really short and he doesn't grade too harshly.
prof yaqub was probably one of my favorite profs i've had the pleasure of taking a class with at ucsb so far! his lectures are very easy to follow and interesting and prepare u for assignments. caring, hilarious, and engaging with students! 2 papers + weekly reading responses :) 10/10 class tbh, hope i get to take more hist courses w/him
Reading responses worth 35%, midterm essay worth 25%, final essay worth 40%. I really enjoyed this class. The topic was interesting, there were interesting videos, and when Professor Yaqub lectures he sounds super passionate about what he's talking about. He's super cool. It was a lot of fun!
Professor Yaqub is a great lecturer who is very knowledgable about US history. I thoroughly enjoyed this class and the workload was manageable. 2 essays and weekly reading responses, clear guidelines and IMO very interesting material. Would definitely recommend this course and prof to balance out a difficult schedule.
This is a FANTASTIC course! It includes different forms of historical writings and various historical topics. The reading tasks are heavy, but it's an honor course so it's very reasonable. The assignments required to submit are just six two-pages papers from nine weeks and two cooperative presentations. The discussions are very meaningful.
