CollegeFirst off, Professor Yaqub is a good teacher. His lectures are good, besides them being blatantly left learning. The major problem is that he grades so tough with almost no feedback. The class is graded on two writing assignments, and two tests, both of which are written. Most people get ridiculously low grades on these. tons of reading too.
ONE OF THE BEST PROFESSORS on this campus. His lectures are very engaging and storytelling. Does a really good job of boiling down complicated history topics. reading heavy but no homework.
Im a senior and this his class has definitely been one of my favorites at UCSB since I've been here. Really nice guy but also really passionate about what he teaches. Two papers which accounted for most of the grade but I found the papers quite fun to do as the lectures and readings are really interesting and engaging.
My favorite professor at UCSB! Very well-spoken, you can tell how much effort he puts into teaching. He makes extremely confusing topics sound simple. I'm always zoned out in other lectures, but he kept me engaged the whole time. Very accommodating when I was ill and needed an extension, and at the end of the quarter with the COVID outbreak.
Professor Yaqub is a great lecturer and was super accommodating, especially amidst the beginning of the COVID-19 crisis. Really nice guy who makes learning history interesting.
He's very kind, and does his best to make dry material interesting. However, there are many resources that can substitute for lecture. Barron's EZ 101 Study Keys for American history are solid gold. Unfortunately, they make lectures obsolete (and, he posts his slides on Gauchospace anyways). Very, very nice, but lectures aren't that helpful.
