Professor Nabi is my favorite professor at UCSB. She makes sure to give examples for all concepts which allows students to understand the material better. There was one midterm, one final and a small paper, which were all online.
The class is pretty interesting and she is passionate about the material. However, she isn't the most charismatic professor. Compared to the other upper division comm classes, this one is definitely more challenging. Grade is composed of 3 exams, a 2 page essay, and some participation. Exams can be difficult, but take good notes and read carefully.
Do not take her class, is she knowledgeable on the subject, sure. But her exams are the hardest I have ever taken in my academic career and even when you think you did well you didn't. her exams are 10% multiple-choice and the rest will be short answer and essay questions. Least favorite class at UCSB by far. The course consist of 3 exams/1 essay.
+ Content & teaching: very good to excellent. Nabi is a highly respectable researcher, especially in persuasion, and she is quite good at lecturing; I really learned a lot - Grade is heavily dependent on participation & lacking can SIGNIFICANTLY impact your grade. Those who prefer to be quiet/learn more independently, be aware & make an effort!
Nice professor, difficult class. TONS of reading. We only had midterm/final so there's not many chances to improve your grade. Tests are challenging and require you to reason and analyze, definitely not simple/straightforward. Lowkey regretting taking this class
Professor Nabi is the best teacher in the COMM department at UCSB, hands down. Her class isn't just enjoyable, you really learn a ton because she's brilliant. For all the people on here complaining about how hard/bad of a teacher she is... you're clearly just looking for the easy way out. Her classes are NOT that bad.
I know she didn't get the most amazing rates but I think she's a really great professor. Her tests are hard and you do need to know a lot, but she gives really understandable examples in class and the books do a good job explaining as well. Course is heavy in material but overall i feel like I've learned a lot. put in effort and its very doable
Lectures were very interesting but material was often difficult. Readings reinforced what was discussed in lecture and greatly added to my understanding of the material. Do the readings and make connections to the examples given in class and this class is relatively easy!
I am not sure how I feel about this class. It was a weird class. I learned a lot though. Tests were really difficult and paper was also weird. However, after taking this class, everytime I see and ad I think of the theory that would apply.
Taken as a summer class. Prof. Nabi is clearly very knowledgeable but her lectures are not easy to outline. I often found that the book did a better job of explaining some of the topics than she did, although in many cases she contradicted the book and told us to listen to her instead (little confusing). Tests are worded vaguely as well
I don't know why people think she is hard. I just attended lecture and took notes since powerpoints are not posted online. The tests are very straightforward and easy to me. Straight off slides. You don't even have to read since she highlights everything you need to know.
Nabi is a great teacher overall. Very theoretical class, but gives tons of examples that are important for understanding material. No slides posted so you must go to class to get a good grade. Tests are on the harder side, especially the final even though she said it would be easier. Reading is not too necessary, she highlights what you need to kno
Great lecturer! Very knowledgable & friendly. GO to lecture, tests are based mostly from her lecture. Nabi is very approachable, and easy to talk to. There's one MC midterm & MC Final. She's one of my favorite professors in the Comm dept. Take her class!!
Great teacher! Her lectures are well organized and power point slides are pretty concise. Does an extremely good job of making class material understandable. Enthusiastic, great energy. Made me want to take other classes she offered.
No paper, just a multiple choice midterm and final. Both tests are extremely challenging. Nabi loves the course material and knows the theories so inside and out. Utilizing office hours is crucial.
boring class, boring style of teaching, boring professor. Has the audacity to call out people who are quietly talking in class. dont recommend.
Loved her! Dr. Nabi was very hard but extremely helpful.
Take her! Interesting and really smart.
GREAT professor! Extremely intelligent and always willing to help her students. Difficult material, so KNOW the material! You will learn a lot of interesting information if you are into the media aspect of communication.
for tests, u need 2 REALLY understand material, don't just memorize. when taking notes, it helped me 2 write down her examples & how each theory/concept applied to them. comparison 2 mullin is a good way 2 think of tests: must kno SPECIFICS of theories. go to OH to go over test w/ her if u don't do well. i got a As in her classes, it's possible.
Most of the comments are spot on. Nabi knows her stuff and expects you to know it all too. The most honest assessment of Nabi's class is that it exactly what is wrong with the Comm Dept. @ UCSB. She forces you to memorize material you'll forget next week and devalues creative or integrative thought. Don't take this class.
Very enthusiastic professor but an unfair grader. I studied A LOT for the midterm and was confident afterwords but recieved close to an F. Luckily the paper was graded easy and it wasn't hard to write. Lectures are kinda long and boring.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!! If you thought Mullins was bad, this is just a JOKE. She will decieve you with her enthusiasm, but then when the midterm comes around, you realize they are all trick questions, and you will fail...and i am an A student. Also, i have never gotten below a B on a paper, and i got a D...RUN FOR YOUR LIFE
Tests extrememly difficult!
