Greatest Comm professor I've had so far. TAs were great and easily accessible. Reverse classroom structure, attendance mandatory but allowed to miss a lot with no penalty. Easy quizzes and accessible for help with final paper. Would take again!
Amazing professor!! Great and engaging lectures, posts all important lectures in online videos, and has extreme passion for students. Best COMM 89 prof!!
prof lane is one of the best at ucsb. you can tell he's genuinely passionate about the concepts he teaches and he makes a genuine effort to connect with and cater to his students. his lectures are hilarious and interactive, and he makes what would otherwise be rather heavy and difficult concepts digestable. beware of pop quizzes in-lecture though!
Seriously loved this class because of Prof. Lane. His lectures are really clear and interesting, he uses a lot of pop-culture references and makes it really engaging. Besides one big final paper, this class was not a lot of work and as long as you keep up with lectures and at least try you'll most likely do well.
Dr. Lane is one of the best profs I've had so far at UCSB. Super kind person, interesting & engaging lectures, and makes the material fun to learn. He relates the material to our generation which I liked. Manageable weekly assignments & readings and only have in-person lecture 1x/wk (he posts other lectures as well). Plan on taking him again! 10/10
Really good guy. The lectures were informative and learned a lot about COMM theories. I enjoyed his style and thought his voice was quite soothing. Not a huge fan of TAs but had a good one which is crucial when taking a class like this. Take Lane for COMM89!
Honestly one of the best professors I've encountered in UCSB. You can tell he genuinely wants his students to understand the material.
i love this man. and his class is an easy dub.
Professor Lane is one of the few professors I've had that actually makes his lectures interesting and thought-provoking. Highly recommend taking a class with him if you have the opportunity.
I really liked prof Lane, he was engaging in lecture and posted videos every week where you could find most of the information. The big assignment is a research paper that you build up to the entire quarter. Also you only have to go to lecture once a week
Responds to emails within a few hours! Thank you
very passionate professor; ta has been very helpful
I like Professor Lane. I appreciated that there were short lectures posted online for us to follow. I felt like there was a lot of small homework assignment that would have been helpful if we got feedback on it but so many things were just "participation" points so it felt pointless.
Prof Lane is super cool and makes class fun by trying to relate it to our generation with memes in his slides. Attendance isn't mandatory for lecture, but is for discussion. Final is a research paper 5-8 pages - not bad!
IF YOU EVER HAVE CHANCE TO TAKE HIS CLASS, TAKE IT! I took his class in Winter 2021, I took Prof Afifi's class before, I will say comparatively Dan's class is one of the best class I've ever taken. His lecture is literally Youtube videos, funny, entertaining. Very nice professor, and very easy to get a good grade. I eventually got a 98%. TAKE HIM!
Prof. Lane was assisted by Prof. Merolla W21. Grading included Intro Video (5%), Weekly Assignments (40%), Paper Outline (10%), Research Paper (40%) and Research Participation (5%). Lectures + reading material was interesting and easy to understand. I recommend Li Qi as a TA.
Completely async class but still had amazing lectures by Prof. Lane and Prof. Merolla. Homework assignments were not hard and the final paper was not too difficult either, especially considering there was no midterm/final exam. Overall a great class with great professors
Lane makes 89 feel more like a Youtube tutorial than a Comm class. His lectures are engaging, relatable, to the point, and track extremely well with his assignments. The class is involved and discusses research in a way that doesn't feel overly academic while still putting students behind-the-wheel to gain experience thinking like a researcher.
He was honestly one of the best professors. His lectures are so clear and engaging, and his slides are very informative but not complicated at all. He doesn't waste time and you can see that he cares a lot about his students. He explained every concept with a real-life example so that it's easier to understand. I loved his class so much!
I had him in spring quarter of 2020 and I thought he was a great professor. He was really understanding and put a lot of effort into the material he taught. His presentations were funny and he tried to relate a lot to his audience. You have to read the chapters but the works was average and relatively fine.
Professor Lane's teaching was very clear and easy to follow. I hope to have him again for upper-division courses! His lectures would also include funny scenes from shows (that applied to the material, of course). Def passes the vibe check.
my favorite prof in the lower comm division courses! lectures are clear and organized. he is so patient and understanding. bumps you up to the next letter grade if you are .5 away. one paper, one midterm, and one final that are about 30% each.
Professor Lane is a very kind, caring teacher. His lectures for comm 89 were very clear and concise. His tests focused more on the lecture than on the book, though you should also read the book. Professor Lane is overall a good professor and I would definitely retake his class!
Professor Lane is one of the most caring and knowledgeable professors I've had so far. He is always prepared to class and he would always make sure his lectures are clear. He provides clear guidelines on paper and tests. Tests is not hard, but you really need to understand the theories thoroughly and know how to apply them.
