He was honestly one of the best professors. His lectures are so clear and engaging, and his slides are very informative but not complicated at all. He doesn't waste time and you can see that he cares a lot about his students. He explained every concept with a real-life example so that it's easier to understand. I loved his class so much!
I had him in spring quarter of 2020 and I thought he was a great professor. He was really understanding and put a lot of effort into the material he taught. His presentations were funny and he tried to relate a lot to his audience. You have to read the chapters but the works was average and relatively fine.
Professor Lane's teaching was very clear and easy to follow. I hope to have him again for upper-division courses! His lectures would also include funny scenes from shows (that applied to the material, of course). Def passes the vibe check.
my favorite prof in the lower comm division courses! lectures are clear and organized. he is so patient and understanding. bumps you up to the next letter grade if you are .5 away. one paper, one midterm, and one final that are about 30% each.
Professor Lane is a very kind, caring teacher. His lectures for comm 89 were very clear and concise. His tests focused more on the lecture than on the book, though you should also read the book. Professor Lane is overall a good professor and I would definitely retake his class!
Professor Lane is one of the most caring and knowledgeable professors I've had so far. He is always prepared to class and he would always make sure his lectures are clear. He provides clear guidelines on paper and tests. Tests is not hard, but you really need to understand the theories thoroughly and know how to apply them.
Great professor whose lectures are easy to follow and well organized. You can tell he respects and cares about his students, and listens to concerns and feedback seriously. Very helpful both inside and outside of class.
Super organized professor who listens to students and immediately puts our feedback into practice. He handled the COVID situation well and offered generous alternatives for the final. Engaging lectures, eager to answer questions . Tests were reasonable, and help for paper is given in section. He also always ends lectures and sections early!
Dan is a really good lecturer. He puts the theories into understandable language and provides you with clear examples. You do have to attend section every week and there are weekly assignments but they usually only take an hour or two to complete. The tests are a little difficult but that is normal for COMM88/89. Essays are graded competitively.
Professor Lane is one of the best Comm professors at this school. There is group participation every class so beware of that. The class consists of 2 papers (the second one builds off the first one) and a midterm that was pretty difficult. He posts lecture videos that are basically the same thing he goes over in class so participation is not mand.
great teacher loved the class
COMM188 was one of the most memorable classes I've taken at UCSB. Professor Lane and TA were very accessible if you ever needed help. Take the class, you will not regret it!
The best Communication professor at UCSB by a landslide. Will take his classes over and over again.
His class was so much fun and genuinely interesting! His lectures were never boring because he's super engaging and makes us do fun topic exercises. He makes us do a lot of group discussion with our table which keeps the energy up. His midterm was a bit difficult but there are a lot more opportunities to get a good grade (extra credit offered)!
love that guy
Dr. Lane is very well-spoken and has put a lot of time and effort into this course. I took it as a summer course and while it was accelerated, I learned so much valuable information in this class. With interesting topics and straightforward video lectures, this class and professor are A+ quality.
The format of this course is a little weird (feels like you are doing busywork for Weeks 1-8, then things get really intense at the end), but it ends up being pretty balanced and informative. Lane manages the group project really well and make sure to hold group members accountable. Expect weekly homework assignments + four question quizzes.
Professor Lane's class was extremely interesting and he cares a lot about his students! This is a group project class though so be prepared for that, but he gives you ample of class time to work on everything. Would highly recommend.
I took it Winter 2022 - there was a group paper, but for the most part, the course was pretty relaxed. Professor Lane's lectures are engaging and interesting. The course content can create for some tough conversations, but Professor Lane handles it really well! The lectures also go by fast because there's always a fun activity to do.
Took him on last summer. The lectures and assignments are inspirational. He is also very generous and caring to students!
His lectures are done in a unique and easy-to-understand style. He cares a lot about what he teaches and makes sure that every student understands what he says. The group project is a bit annoying, especially if you have a bad group but you get started on it at the beginning of the quarter so there's time to make sure everyone does their work
Best professor ever!! I am not a big fan of politics but the way Lane taught the class was so engaging and it made me actually interested in what he had to say. We had weekly quizzes and assignments which were a little tough but doable. The only other assignment was the group project, so if you have a bad group this could make it difficult.
I love this man. Very caring and creates amazing, John Green type lecture videos. The weekly online quizzes were a little difficult and the group project can be either really difficult or really easy depending who is in your group. But overall, I enjoyed coming to class and the content was super interesting.
He loves his students and super dedicated. He is very helpful and understanding
