Do not take his class. Lots of work but ABSOLUTE MEANINGLESS. HATE IT.
A decent lecturer and a helpful professor when you have questions, but boy he's inconsiderate about your life outside his class. Very antsy about extensions, despite the midterm and paper deadlines being unreasonable for most of his students' schedules, and not very grateful for our time/attention. The presentations were fun and engaging though.
Take his classes if you want to wake up at 8 in the morning and sit through a 3hr lecture where half of it is him patrolling the room tryna see if his ridiculous method of forcing meaningless discussions is any good. He calls the papers research paper but its just "researching" from his readings he feeds you every week. 350 letters is not enough.
A kind person up close, but a terrible professor. His assignments and approach to attendance show an utter lack of respect for the lives of students outside his class. Tons of readings, exams and research papers are inflated to guarantee feeling like busywork, and boring lectures. Miss lecture twice and you're threatened with an automatic fail.
Assignments; so many requirements that it limits ur creativity. Presentations; answer questions (which r given day of) based on quotes from readings we turned in a day before = directionless. We r not given the questions beforehand so the quotes often dont align with the questions. Long boring lectures. not prostudent will pray on ur downfall
This professor is incredibly friendly but this course was extremely boring and long. There are weekly writing assignments which were graded fairly difficult because he hires a grader that is not associated with the school. The midterm and final are both essays based on the readings and films. You will be called on in some class discussions.
Bloom is okay, he is very boring though. You must show up and do the in class assignments and do the readings cause you'll be using things from the book in essays. Make sure you cite properly, and stay on top of things. He is nice when you talk with him outside class, but his class boring. Do good on the midterm and final paper, you should be good.
Not sure how Bloom was years ago (considering the low ratings) but my experience with him was solid! He's actually kind of hilarious and honestly cares about film theory. Lectures were a bit slow, but we did group presentations every week which were honestly very fun and helpful. Midterm was essay questions and Final was a group presentation.
Usually 2-3 readings a week and a one-question MC "quiz" at the start of each class. No need to buy anything, she provides online pdfs of the readings. One midterm, one final, and the rest is attendance/participation. Amazing academic and hilarious teacher. Some have expressed difficulty in getting accommodations with her though.
This class includes 2-3 readers per week. I did not think the workload was unreasonable. I think that Prof. Jullien does a good job of leading the class's conversation, and the readings themselves were interesting. Overall, pretty straightforward. Graded on participation and 2 exams. She is fair. If you want to succeed it is definitely possible.
Inaccessible outside of class, doesn't know how to speak to students not in the major, unclear and inconsistent grading, only a midterm and final for grade. Brilliant academic, horrible teacher.
Peter is a great guy, he's knowledgeable & he's passionate. He does care, but a STICKLER for revisions & MUST be in class unless there's a MAJOR EMGY! I had a family vacation, requested 2 weeks prior for a Monday makeup, he wanted me in class to watch a weird redundant movie with no dialogue; just music I could have watched in a hotel on laptop.
Three screenings per week, over ten weeks for about 30 total screenings. Attendance is taken at every screening by writing and turning in responses to the screenings. Several dense articles to read every week. The midterm is a 10-page take home essay. The research paper is also 10 pages. The final is a mix of take home and in class, about 6 pages.
Class is tough because it is reading heavy, but she explains very well in class so you have to go if you want to understand. Not a tough grader, and loves when people show interest and ask questions. Go to office hours or talk to her after class, she is very kind and seems to care about her students.
If you want feedback on your papers before you turn them in, you will be told to go to office hours to review things you have previously written and the comments on those. Forget getting answers to your questions about assignments as well. You get the most roundabout answer that will leave you more unsure than before you asked the question.
Professor Jullien is a very smart lady. Although she is very quiet during lectures, they are still engaging, as long as you did the reading! Also, take advantage of office hours because she is very sweet and answers all your questions! She appreciates when you take time to come see her with specific questions. Overall a good class!
Madame Jullien is a very sweet woman. She does, as everyone said, have a soft voice, but it's part of her nice personality. That being said, don't let the soft voice deceive you, she is a very strong academic and her grading is confusing until you approach her, at which point she's more than happy to help! If you visit office hours, she's great!
This class seems so interesting, but the lectures are so dry and brutal that it somehow makes the topics excruciating to learn about. The final and midterm are both pretty tough, and there is just so much information to know for it. I wouldn't recommend this class.
Two words: BUSY WORK. three more words: SO MUCH READING.
He really knows what he's talking about and cares that you understand the material. His lectures are fairly interesting and he likes to talk to students. Really cool guy! Unfortunately, he gives tons of assignments and you're always reading for this class.
Really great person and genuinely cares about his students but SOOO much reading and unnecessary busy work. Had him for 187IR as well, the longest most dense reading assignments and the seminars were pretty boring.
Although Prof. Jullien tends to be too quiet, and the class isn't particularly hard, I loved it. I recommend taking advantage of her office hours because she always answers your questions thoughtfully and helpfully. She is a very kind and intelligent lady.
Being quiet doesn't make one a bad professor. She gets across points from the readings that are worth thinking about and that help students understand the time period being studied. Come to her with direct/prepared questions in office hours, participate, and try to keep up with readings and you should be good.
Although she can be too quiet sometimes, she is obviously passionate about the subject and that comes across, especially in office hours (take advantage of them!). Make sure to keep up with the readings! The tests are easy though and she is a generous grader.
