He is super super helpful in Office Hour. He's a tough grader but it is very fair. If you understand everything in class then you are guaranteed to get a good grade.
Professor Long is very good at explaining the material by going through proofs pretty carefully. His tests are reasonable difficulty as well. However, his grading criteria is extremely opaque, and he also did not upload the final exams for us to view how we actually did.
I think ill never have a better teacher again no joke. Completely accesible from outside of class, made it easy to learn and understand a hard topic.
The best math professor I have ever had at UCSB. His lectures are very easy to follow and understand although the second unit was a lot more difficult than the first. Attendance was not mandatory for both section and lecture. There was only two tests: a midterm and a final, which was on week 10 instead of finals week. Weekly homework was good.
Good teaching style, go to the office hour will help learning a lot.
This class being "easy" isnt just a meaning that nobody is learning, it means that he does it well. The best professor I have had at UCSB. Breath of fresh air.
Goat goat goat Amazing Amazing Fun Fun Fun Amazing Amazing Goat goat goat Best Best Best
He was simply amazing.
Elie Abdo is one of the best professors I have ever had. Elie's lectures are clear and enjoyable. The homework is extremely fair and graded on completion, and going to office hours makes homework a breeze. Tests are exactly as in the study guide, and Elie ensures you know the material. Lecture notes are posted online.
there is nothing to complain about this guy. he is just a really really nice and sweet guy who wants his students to feel comfortable and learn math. he doesn't assign his students a lot of homework, and his grading distribution is fair. will definitely take his class again.
Goat! The absolute best prof I've encountered so far. He really cares about your learning and gives super engaging lectures. He also spends a massive chunk of lecture time individually helping people with practice problems, walking around, getting to know people. That said, his class is so easy you may not learn quite as much as other sections.
Not only did he make a historically difficult class very understandable, but he did so in a very hands-on and fun way thay kept the entire class engaged with what he was saying. Fantastic teacher.
he's really nice and the class is made in a way that you are going to get a good grade if you put effort in. elie really cares about his students too
(Fall 2023) He explained group theory decently well, although he went really fast; we finished the core material by Week 6, and spent the remaining time doing representation theory (grad level math to unprepared undergrads). Really funny guy though, and his tests were brute memorization so easy to game (not fun studying for though).
Best professor *ever*. Makes you think about how you should be thinking about the material and how you should be thinking about mathematics. Excellent in office hours.
Amazing professor. He lectures slowly and clearly and is very interactive. He always asks students for the next step of proof and guides students to complete the proof. Homework is a bit heavy and not easy, but it is manageable if you attend lectures. You can tell he has a lot of mathematical wisdom by the way he teaches. You will never walk alone.
Nice guy. His exams are very similar to the practice exam. Lectures are not the best but he tries his best to explain things.
Worst Professor I've ever had period. Doesn't care about students. Was able to find YouTube videos that explained concepts in a quarter of the time with infinitely more clarity than he had in lecture. Tests are extremely difficult. Grading scheme leaves no room for partial credit, you either get full credit or no credit.
Astounding in his immediate responses to say he can do nothing to help a student in need, or completely ignore the emails when it is not reasonable for him to say that. Does not care at all if his students learn anything, just shows up, lectures, and leaves. No communication, posts nothing online, he simply does not care. Actual lectures are fine.
If you take this class with Long, expect to learn nothing, feel super stressed, waste a lot of time, and get bad grades.
Excellent lectures and resources, the exam material you are expected to know is very clear and he is extremely receptive and caring. He clearly prioritizes student's success and well being alongside their mastery of the fundamentals, and grades very fairly.
Great guy, lectures are not always completely clear but he is willing to slow down to clarify any details and available to ask questions. The material on exams maps closely to everything covered in class
Absolutely excellent. The math is not easy, but it's upper division and his lectures were clear and well presented. Test were fair and based upon homework and classwork.
Teaches graduate level math with no curve. Tests are rote memorization with no thinking involved, just have to hope you got lucky and memorized the exact random proof that he talked about once. Is of little to no help in office hours, just acts like your question was nonsense and just moves on. Changed textbooks 3 times without telling class or TA
