Very clear lectures, explains every step. Posts lecture notes. Webwork is sometimes kinda useless, but the exam review packets are really all the studying you need for the exams. Exam aren't easy but with just some prep you'll get an A. I definitely walked away having learned stuff. Porter's also very unintentionally funny which is nice. Great prof
Highly recommend Prof Porter. Lectures are very clear and he posts notes online after class. If you do the weekly homework and keep up with lectures you will definitely get a solid grade!
Straight forward lectures, no beating around the bush for what he wants you to know on tests given the homework and practice tests. Great professor.
Surprisingly, I feel like the class was a bit too easy. The notes he writes are extremely detailed and effectively make it so the lectures are pointless. The tests are super easy and the homework is even easier. The grading scale was probably the most lenient thing I've ever seen. Absolutely would recommend if you want an easy A.
Best math professor I've ever had and among my top profs! Very accommodating and understanding of the circumstances and weighed the hw enough for me to not be anxious for each test and still do my best on them. The tests are very reflective of the lectures and review problems and make me feel something for math
Fell extremely behind, didnt do any work/show up for most of the class, yet he let me make up my work late and still gave me full credit. Passed the class with a decent understanding of the subject. Just do the work and youll get an A easily. I didnt end up finishing some of the work, and still ended up with a B. Tests are very fair as well.
If you have the chance to take a class with him, do it. His lectures are very very easy to understand which is a RARE thing at ucsb! This is the second time I've taken a class with him and I can't recommend him enough.
Class was super easy. For his lectures he would hand-write prepared notes on a projector, so when taking notes you could just copy what he was writing and get by fine. I asked him for a bunch of favors, like extending homework and changing the day of my final, and he was super chill about it.
Great professor. Really clear. Tests were just like practice test HW. Class was also 25% HW, which is a lot. And the HW had unlimited tries. Matt is a really nice guy who actually cares about teaching instead of being obsessed with getting published as often as possible. 4B with Matt has been my fav class at UCSB thus far.
If you're looking for a theatrical performance, you won't find it here. He is booming and monotonous, however he teaches the relevant material and gives examples that are very similar to that of the homework and exams. His exam problems can be tough, but if you know the material easy to solve. Clear and to the point lecturer.
I can't be too harsh on him since he was chosen as our professor last minute, but even with that, he was a decent professor. He lectured reasonably clearly, but the homework was a bit much -- about 15 problems due every week. His exams were not too far from what was on the study guide, so you don't need to be too wary about surprises.
Very nice. Cares that students succeed.
Matt Porter is the coolest/cutest. He's so nice and willing to help. He explains everything clearly. And his math jokes are so adorable. I normally hate math but I loved this class because of him.
great teacher
Matt is the man! I'm not sure if I learned more from his teaching or his beard... Probably the beard. Great teacher though!
Was my TA for Math 34B. Helped to clarify the lectures pretty well and was always available for help during office hours
Matt was the most helpful math TA I've ever had, he was easy to talk to and always addressed my questions well. His office hours are super helpful.
Matt was a great TA, definitely made everything more clear and helped me out. I would definitely recommend him to anyone.
Matt is so patient and so helpful. He always took the time to go through problems step by step until it was clear to the students. He had nor problem putting in extra hours to help students as well. He is an asset to any educational department.
Matt was a great TA. The professor that quarter was new, so his lectures were unorganized, vague, and not very helpful. Matt, however, was always willing to clarify everything and practically retaught the lesson. He communicated well with the class, was approachable, and even held extra office hours if needed.
Very friendly and willing to help students. Most definitely a helpful instructor.
He was willing to answer questions during sections and also during office hours. He made sure that we knew when he would be available outside of section. Also, made sure that we understood what was being taught during lecture.
Matt was a great TA! He would go over hw problems and explain how to get to the correct answer very clearly. I did well on the exams because of his reviews before hand. Definitely recommend!!
The professor is amazing! I honestly didn't like math before but because he made it so interesting I really loved math. This sounds like I am high or something but no I really liked math because of him. He is very generous and funny and really helpful in everything. You are lucky to get him as a professor and I cannot say this about any professor
