PORTER M J
The content itself has a steep learning curve, but his expectations are clear and his exams are reasonable. Homeworks are long and quite difficult, but make sure not to rush through them since they are helpful and graded on correctness.
Pretty boring lecture to have at 8 in the morning, but the exams are pretty identical to the practice exams and problems he gives you. Very fair guy, easy class.
Just really bad. Added all the homework grades after the final and I got a bunch of really bad scores. He then didn't respond to my email about it. Maybe this is just how the class is but he was very strict on everything being exactly how he wanted. He might be better for a different class.
Although the class is challenging and different from typical math courses, Matt Porter is one of the best in the department. He's very organized, engaging, and welcoming to questions without being condescending. The homework load is heavy but genuinely helpful, and manageable if spaced out through the week. If you put in the effort, you'll do well.
Grade is exam heavy (worth 70% of overall grade) but Porter does a great job of providing work that accurately reflects exam difficulty and prepares you. Grading system is very generous and incredibly helpful. Lectures do a good job demonstrating concepts. I felt well prepared for exams and would 100% take this professor again.
MY KINGGG I love porter, math 2B is much harder than math 2A but he recognizes that and really wants people to pass his class. I had him for 2A too, he's really funny and a cool guy in general. I will say he doesn't really curve at all (rounds up to next percentage) but it's not too hard to pass his classes since the practice tests are good
