Be prepared to study a lot in the class and the textbook is your holy grail. His tests are extremely difficult with the first midterm having an average of 33%. He is a nice guy but needs to lighten up the difficulty of the questions on the exams. No matter how much you study, there will still be questions you cannot answer at all in 50mins.
Professor Greene has insightful lectures and there are ample opportunities to earn credit besides the exams. The weekly quizzes are a great way to consolidate the dense content in the lectures and I found the exams more than reasonable for the breadth and complexity of content in 142b.
As difficult as this class was, I am glad to have taken it. Prof Greene is rigorous in his instruction yet very knowledgeable about biochem. Use the learning goals he put on Canvas to structure your reading of the textbook. Read the book in depth, at length, and do all practice problems and you will succeed. His office hours are also very helpful.
I don't know why he gets such a bad rep. His tests are definitely hard but he really cares about his students and actually listens to feedback. Biochem is just such a dense subject, so get ready to read and be sure to stay on top of it.
Hard class but biochem is a hard subject. Greene is passionate and wants you to really understand the material. Its a lot of stuff to fit in one quarter, so get ready to do a ton of reading. Go to lecture for easy points, stay on track with the readings, and study as much as you can before the exams.
Greene's not the worst professor I've had in the chem department, but that is an extremely low bar. He seems more concerned about proving how smart he is and how tricky he can make his questions, rather than facilitating a good learning environment. His tests are convoluted, long and unclear and he's downright condescending when asked questions.
First midterm average was a 33% LOL. His way of teaching is very unsustainable for students, like assigning lots of tedious work that just doesn't help you actually learn the material. A very fast, monotonous lecturer, you're better memorizing the textbook. We had to learn 2 chapters in 3 days while the test questions were 100% application-based.
Lectures and reading intensive, he does his best to simplify concepts to an extent. He does tend to talk extremely fast but is nice about repeating himself. You need to make sure you're at lectures to get participation points. DO THE READING.
His class essentially doesn't help at all, but you should expect to recite the textbook. Tough exams but not unmanageable. Many exhausting participation points, which I think is very bad design.
Never thought i would not receive an A for a lab class. Everything was graded at the end and had extremely vague instructions. Gotten points knocked off for a bad conclusion. even though it told me to summarize. By the time I knew what type of lab report she wanted, the labs were all done. Someone should honestly fire this atrocity of a professor.
minimal instructions, yet maximum scrutiny when it comes grading. horrible.
Typical physics class, but Dogic is honestly a pretty good lecturer. As long as you study and show up, understand concepts like any other class, you will do well. Also do the homework, questions are literally gonna be on the test. Lecture examples show up on tests. It easier if you like physics XD.
I dont know why my mans gets so much slander, taught 142B and 110L. Makes you dig deep into the material and will have challenging test questions, but has generous curve. Overall a nice guy who makes you work with peers.
Awful class. Unclear grading, tons of work for 2 units
I cannot emphasize how horrible this professor is as a person and an instructor. The course is beyond poorly designed. The lab "guides" are horrendously bad at elucidating what is actually happening in the thing in front of you. She has the empathetic capacity of a single RNA strand. However, you will for sure learn how to do a linear fitting.
A good professor that has insightful answers to any question thrown at them. Allows for a fluid flow of lecture material and helps bring topic points together. Class engagement is friendly, and students walk away ready to take homework while learning more from the problems.
Dogic isn't the greatest at answering questions off-the-cuff (he'd often make mistakes when proving things on the board in class) but he's a funny and good-demeanored professor and I regret not going to his office hours more. Difficulty spike after the first midterm, but fully understand the homeworks on GauchoSpace and you'll be fine. Solid choice
Right before the final, Dogic decided to give a bunch of new material and not even go over it in the slides. I don't know what he wants from us. Its so disheartening to study just for him to throw more stuff that hasn't even been discussed nor is it in the same chapter. He didn't even assign that chapter, he simply didn't say anything.
Unclear grading scheme for 20AL-BL-CL. Fygenson was basically absent from all labs, and her mandatory lectures for 20CL were a waste of time and were canceled often without warning. Get a good TA or this class will be horrible. This is the first time this class has been run, but it was not good.
Incredibly unclear instructions, we had no idea what we were being graded on half the time. We were marked down for not including things that weren't asked for in the lab manual. When you do get a lab grade, it generally comes with about 4 words (if that) of explanation that don't help you improve.
The 20AL-BL-CL series is a new curriculum, so of course its not going to go perfectly the first time. That being said, I literally did not see the professor once in class. Your experience is going to highly depend on which TA you have. Most are disinterested and not great at answering questions. Be prepared to learn everything on your own.
He is one of the nicest professors I've ever had. It's obvious he genuinely cares about his students and will answer every question during lectures. His office hours are also super helpful. His lecture slides were very messy and hard to understand, so attending lectures is important to do well. The homework is difficult but prepares you for exams.
Tbh not a good lecturer, but he's so nice and genuine that it doesn't even matter. Class moves at a slow enough pace that the textbook is all you need, lectures will just confuse you. Tests aren't easy but the HW prepares you well for it. Very fair grader, also unintentionally hilarious. Chill, down to earth prof with abundant office hours.
Professor Dogic is really caring and wants all of his students to do well, so he always available during office hours. The lecture slides can sometimes be confusing, but he answers all questions in class so be sure to go to the lectures. There is lots of Hw, but it is similar to the problems on the exams which makes it very good practice.
