Chronic pain—defined as pain lasting at least three months—affects one in five American adults and is the nation's most costly health condition, exceeding the combined costs of cancer and heart disease. This seminar explores the science of chronic pain and recovery through hands-on research using a novel UCSB-developed biofeedback device. Students will 1. participate in a study by collecting data inside and outside of class, 2. hear from the instructor and expert guest lecturers on pain neuroscience, and 3. design, conduct, and present their own experiment using the biofeedback device. The course introduces essential neuroscience concepts and research methods for students interested in clinical or research careers.
