Film and Media Studies - FAMST

Between 1930 and 1970, a surprising number of notable international artists and filmmakers––Sergei Eisenstein, Leonora Carrington, Elizabeth Catlett, Isamu Noguchi, Louis Malle, Luis Bunuel, and Remedios Varo, to name just a few––were drawn to Mexico City. This course examines the film, literature, and visual art of the exiles and travelers who came to Mexico City in this period, filtered through a survey of the Golden Age of Mexican Cinema and the intellectual scene presided over by Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, before turning to the work of three of the most important filmmakers in the world today--Alfonso Cuarón, Alejandro Iñarritu, and Guillermo del Toro--who inherited and re-globalized this diverse artistic legacy.

Prerequisites: Film Studies 46 or upper-division standing, and consent of instructor.
