Black Studies - BL ST

Examines the role of music, dance and spirituality in informing Black resistance in the African Diaspora. Balancing between theory and practicum, the course explores the aesthetics of Black resistance through the medium of dance and music, with particular focus on Afro-Brazilian cultural repertoire, and also involves learning and practicing Capoeira techniques. A primary goal is to enhance awareness of the history of racial subjugation and racial resistance in the making of contemporary Black performances through dance and music. Students will learn history, techniques and styles of Afro-dance, capoeira and other cultural repertoire including contemporary and historical practices inherited from the struggle for abolition.
