Traditionally, ethnography was conceived as the objective study of exotic Others. In this course, we will survey feminist ethnographic debates that approach ethnography as emotional labor that has never been value-neutral, but rather “partial” in the sense of incomplete and interested (Haraway 1988). We will also approach ethnographic research as embedded in broader “affective economies” (Ahmed 2004) that include humanitarianism, colonialism, development, and human rights. By centering ethnography as a “matter of care” (Puig de la Bella Casa 2017), we will ask questions such as how and why we are affectively drawn to our research and how we practice ethnography with an eye towards ethnographic accountability.
