How can we think of film and media in terms of space & place? From looking at the spaces represented visually in cinema, to analyzing the geographies of film production, or considering the spatialized infrastructure of media, spatial approaches offer hybrid theoretical and practice-based routes for analysis. Through project-based assignments – including video essays, geo-spatial digital mapping, and other location-based visualizations – this course will serve as an introduction to spatially-oriented methods, which we can use to better understand both film and media. No prior audiovisual or GIS experience required.
