Provides an introduction to the theoretical and practice-based frameworks and approaches within feminist media studies. The seminar begins with an examination of archival erasure in the early days of cinema, moves through avant-garde cinematographic experiments, then looks at documentary approaches and questions around representing history, labor and care, and finally culminate in contemporary digital media practice and cyberfeminist critique. Explores work by key theorists and practitioners and dedicates particular attention to the practice of “looking sideways” – examining the folds and interstices between feminist, queer, and decolonial approaches to cinema and media theory and praxis.

Prerequisites: Film Studies 46 or upper-division standing, and consent of instructor.
