Offers an examination of the relationship between religion and photography through history, based on the consideration of photography as both an artistic medium and a social and performative practice. Alongside analysis of the function of photographs in religious life, we will explore various religious concepts in association with photography. Through meditations on topics as spirit, death, ritual, iconicity, sacred space, and gender, students will become familiar with critical theory of photography, visual analysis, and landmark photographs.

CollegeHad confusing rubrics for his assignments and often was irratiated when students asked for clarification. Did little lecturing and had weekly presentations with little direction, leading to confusion among students. Topics did not tie well with screenings as well 3-5 readings per week despite half being labeled as "optional".
She's a tough grader, attendance to lecture is mandatory, and you HAVE to do the readings. But she has a way of lecturing about hard stuff that, instead of making you feel naive, makes you feel smart just being in the conversation. If you show effort, participate, and talk to her after class once or twice she'll give you a boost at the end.
Seems like a nice guy but assigns readings so dense and theoretical that even the TAs admit they don't really understand it. Instead of lecturing he makes you do mandatory group presentations for 2 hours that are only worth attendance points. I haven't spoken to anyone in this class who fully grasps what is going on
Ungraded group presentations every week, and he lectures maybe 1-1.5 hours out of 6 hours of class time, and the lectures don't even really make sense. The TAs are as lost as we are and the readings are incredibly dense but are required for weekly assignments, including the "supplemental" readings. Don't take this prof if possible
Bloom is one of the most confusing professors I've ever encountered. He changes the criteria for assignments weekly and constantly contradicts things our TAs have clearly laid out. We also had to do weekly presentations that were so disorganized that it just felt counterproductive to learning as a whole. Midterm was also so long for no reason.
Do not take his class. Lots of work but ABSOLUTE MEANINGLESS. HATE IT.
