Central to the course is a review of major sociological research traditions, including but not limited to: experiments, surveys, observational studies, ethnography, interviews, focus groups, and analysis of available data, including online sources and other digital media. Exposing and training students who intend to major in sociology to the research methods that sociologists use to create knowledge facilitates an understanding of the connection between theory and research, develops critical thinking skills by teaching students how to evaluate sociological knowledge, and lays the groundwork for our upper-division coursework, in particular our upper-division hands-on methods courses (108 series).

CollegeProbably the most passionate professor I've had in a while. Wish she was a little clearer on certain topics in content analysis (finding your research question and literature review), but giving us a content analysis research project on a subject of our choice was really fun. Quizzes were a little tedious but read and you'll be fine.
I love Professor Tober!! I have her for Soc108C and Soc185C this quarter. She has made me never want to skip a class and I stay engaged through content heavy lectures because of the way she presents it! Her classes have truly reignited my passion for sociology and research Grading can be hard but if you study and attend class your fine.
Loved Tober! Material was not boring at all and I always found the lectures entertaining. I got an A in the class - it was quite easy, we had a good TA too. This was one of the only classes that I enjoyed the reading for!!!
Professor Tober made this class much easier to understand. We had 5 assignments total and a lot of time is giving to complete them, and we go over a lot of it in class and in section. Attendance is not mandatory but going to class would make it much easier. Shes the best!
Dr. Tober is absolutely the best! I transferred in as a SOC major and was hating the profs in the department. She turned things around for me. She's passionate about the field and her research. Attendance is taken every week, 1 fairly easy online reading quiz per week, and final is a research project which includes every other week assignments.
This was my second time taking Professor Tober. One midterm, one final, and several in-class activities. Would definitely take again. Quick to answer emails.
