Provides a foundation for the practice of data science, with an emphasis on the statistical thinking and computer programming required to collect, prepare, and analyze data. Students will explore and implement the data science life cycle in locally relevant contexts. Using the R programming language, the course focuses on the fundamental skills of data manipulation, exploratory data analysis, and data visualization. A key component of the curriculum is learning to ethically communicate findings and to consider the broader impacts of data-driven decisions.

Prerequisites: Math 2B or 3B with a minimum grade of C or better.

Professor just reads off of the slides and the lecture material doesn't help you for the final anyways. The midterms and final are worth 90% of your grade with 10% being mandatory lab attendance. The two midterms aren't too bad if you paid attention but the final was way different than what we learned. Tanked my grade from A to a B after a curve.

she is sweet but by far one of the worst professors i have ever had at ucsb. she reads off her slides and the code demonstrations are already written, meaning that she sits down and doesn't really teach. her mc tests are 90% of your grade and really tricky, and there are two mandatory sections a week. would really recommend another professor.

Avoid her at all costs! she's sweet lady but a terrible teacher who makes the course unnecessarily hard. The grade is based on two midterms(20%x2) and a final(50%).The midterms were very tricky. Prepare to face 50 ridiculous questions for the final. Students have been complaining about the unfairness of the questions for years but she doesn't care.

The exams are not related to the lectures. If this is a major course for you and you want to get an A, RUN!!!! Exams are worth 90% of your grade, and no way to get a good grade on exams.

Took PSTAT10 with her over Fall quarter and was a terrible decision. She is a very nice lady, but the way the grading in the class was structured was very poor. The final was all MCQ and worth 50% of our grade. Final was completely different material than what she goes over in lecture. Worse class/grade I had so far at UCSB.
