This class seems really intense at first, but quickly becomes a breeze to handle and very interesting. Lectures are straight forward, as he outlines what he wants you to know. Participation matters, but you are not punished for answering incorrectly. Homework load is decently light. Definitely one of the better Anth classes in my opinion.

Lots of reading every week. Very specific expectations so exams are memory only. Attendance required - only one excused and u gotta explain why, also u must participate every class. No tech allowed ever, only handwritten notes. Only take if u absolutely love the subject. Difficult class and not an understanding professor

Incredibly kind He encourages questions and always takes time to explain concepts clearly Doesn't tolerate any distractions or nonsense during class Lectures can be dense, and no tech allowed, but managable. The midterm and final are both essay-based and include concept definitions If you're willing to put in the effort you'll learn a lot from him

This was one of my favorite classes I took at UCSB. Professor Jarada is extremely knowledgeable and makes lectures very engaging. His grading is very straightforward and he genuinely cares about his students and wants them to succeed in his class. Highly highly recommend taking a class with him!

This class will initially sound daunting (long weekly readings, detailed notes every week, essay exams, mandatory attendance), but you get used to it quickly. Very routine schedule; 50-75 pages of reading per week (they're small pages), notes on readings, and two exams. Dense material, but pretty much just memorization

One of the best professors I've had. Lectures and reading can be dense, but he outlines what you need to know for the midterm/final. Midterm and final include concept definitions and an essay question. Homework is reading + reading notes. Attendance required, participation = extra credit in large lectures. Fair grader. Would recommend! Super nice!
