Goodearl is a sweet and very nice man but unfortunately his lectures are boring. Save yourself some time and just sign up for CLAS. I went to lecture 3 times the entire quarter and scored a 100 on the first midterm, a 98 on the second and a 99 on the final. His grading is extremely generous & tests are very straightforward. Just go to CLAS!!
His math111 series are the toughest courses in my undergrad, grade is 100% base on exams. Has homework but never hand back or grade. (counts nothing) Lecture is not understandable. Never response to email and very tough grader. DON'T Take his course unless you don't care about GPA and willing to learn EVERYTHING after class.
No point in going to lecture. He just reads off the slides and you will fall asleep. You have to go to CLAS to pass this class.
His lectures are moderately clear, though he can be boring at times. His tests are moderate in difficulty. He seems willing to help.
Tough grader. I enjoyed the material and I learned a lot, unfortunately with his grading and special grading schemes it did not show. As a result the course was a discouraging experience. You've been warned!
Professor Goodearl's Math 4A class was boring. He has a very soft voice that makes him hard to hear during lecture and puts the majority of students to sleep. His lectures were unclear and his notes on the board were confusing. In order to pass this class, I recommend doing the assign readings, working out the book problems, and doing CLAS.
Great lecturer, straight forward. Thoroughly enjoyed going to lecture, homework is easy, takes less that half an hour. Tests are pretty easy, though he always puts one question to pick apart the A+ kids and everyone else, if you go to lecture, an A+ should be easy to get.

DON'T go to lecture, you're wasting your life if you do. Save yourself from being bored out of your skull & go to CLAS where you'll learn everything you need to know. Goodearl is extremely monotone & has a roundabout way of teaching. It's much simpler than he makes it out to be. Although his grading is extremely generous and his tests are fair.
His lectures put you to sleep but he does a good job of explaining a topic then giving an example. The class is not hard if you do all your homework and really focus on each problem
Really tough class if you haven't had calculus in high school. I had a really hard time keeping up. He knows what he's talking about, but can't teach well. You'll have to rely on section and definitely take CLAS!!!!! GO to as many review sessions as possible! Really tough class as i was going through it, but looking back doesn't seem terrible.
Very boring lectures. I have never fallen asleep in a lecture hall before this guy
His lectures are EXTREMELY boring. He seems to know what he is talking about, but he doesn't explain things very well at all, and there's no interaction. I find that going to lecture is useless, although I go to every one. Test, are not bad if you know what you are doing. GO TO CLAS! I can't stress it enough!! Only way I learned anything at all!

He know's what he's doing, but he isn't able to clearly communicate what he wants students to understand. I don't know why he's rated so high, his class was boring, the midterms/final are much harder than the homework, and overall I learned nothing.
His class is fair. The tests are not ridiculously difficult but they aren't easy. I did not use the text book at all. He isn't very good at explaining; so you have to pay close attention during lecture. Plus, he is a big research professor, what do you expect?
Very nice, humble man. Lectures purely on subject matter; thus they can be a bit on the boring side. Section attendance is compulsory. Tests are essentially homework problems, so ample practice should be sufficient for one to do well. Three grading schemes, and many resources available, such as CLAS and office hours. Use them to your advantage.
BORING and i didn't learn anything from him. I had to get lots of extra help. He seriously did not help with anything.
Clear, helpful and concise. Awesome teacher. Follows book well but can show you different ways if the book isn't clear enough for you. Tests are just like homework, which is online and relatively easy. Some lectures repeated and not necessary to attend, especially before first midterm. A good idea to read the book before homework.
Hands down the best math professor I have had at UCSB. Tests are straight forward and a lot like the homework. Very good at explaining the concepts and is always very helpful. Writes small on the board though so make sure to sit close. Awesome teacher
Awesome teacher. Probably the best teacher I've had here. He is so good that I almost stopped going to class because I was so caught up.
Goodearl is a REALLY good math teacher. He's clear anc concise with all the concepts. The homework is webwork which kinda was tough. His midterms and finals, to me, had the most hardest challenging problems. But he grades 3 different methods so you can get the highest grade.
