he is the goat all the homies love him. has an accent but isnt that thick. if youre confused go to office hours. hes like organic chemistry tutor but irl and better. super clear and super helpful. class was very reasonably paced and he was extremely reasonable with the exams (made last question of final extra cred bc barely anyone got it)
Ashwin was a nice professor but his tests were SO DIFFICULT. There was truly nothing that could honestly prepare you for the midterms and final, besides just having a really good grasp of the concepts. He does curve heavily to compensate for this (10% in my class). Still... if you need a good background in calc do not choose him.
The final was HARD. But Professor Ashwin has been an amazing lecturer throughout the year. He responds to emails and online forum questions super fast and he is always helpful during office hours. A friend of mine was not able to attend his office hour and he went above and beyond to offer a Zoom meeting OUTSIDE his normal office hour to help her.
Took calc in HS and can say that prof overcomplicates simple topics. The few examples in lecture are much harder than the actual homework. Lectures are also hard to follow along with. Tests were difficult but not impossible other than one or two questions that throws everyone off. However, exam averages were F's. He was also rude imo.
I came into Math 3B with only an H Pre-Calc background and found this course much too difficult. I used Khan Academy for most of this class because I couldn't retain any information he taught. I studied for hours on end for his class. Also, his exams are way too difficult, the average on the midterm was 54% and 62% for the final. So disappointed.
Took calculus in high school and understood it fine. This class is very confusing for no reason, avoid it with this professor at all costs.
studying with this professor in this class is most terrible thing for a calculus beginner. It is true and DO NOT TAKE this class with this professor again
If you want to learn calculus, do not choose this professor.
Terrible class! I will not take it again.
Ridiculously hard. Our midterm average grade was an F and the homework is ridiculously hard. Now these things wouldnt be bad if he was a good professor. His lectures are incredibly confusing and not helpful at all and your pretty much left to learn from the textbook and TA. DO NOT TAKE
Do not take this class again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I do not understand all the materials that he gave to us. This class is so awful and terrible and difficult and bad. If you need one good grade, do not choose this class and this professor.
If you do not know a lot about calculus already, DO NOT take 3A with this professor. It's extremely difficult to understand him, he does not know how to answer student's questions, and gives extremely hard tests in comparison to the in-class examples. The class average on our final was an F, since so many students did not understand the material.
Ashwin is nice. It's just that the material is a bit hard and Ashwin is a tough grader. But he's definitely helpful inside and outside of classroom.
People who comprehended Math 4A will do great, but if not, you need to work HARD. Office hours and taking notes are bare minimum. The curve will save you in the end, as the avg on tests isn't great. Ashwin is an incredibly knowledgeable lecturer though and he just wants you to participate so he can help you!
Great professor. Willing to help you to succeed. I got 100% on the final btw.
Professor Ashwin is very helpful and patient. His blackboard handwritings are clear and organized. Notes are available online. The test difficulty level is fair. You will succeed in his class if you read textbook and go to office hours. As a non math major I don't need math classes for credits, but I would love to take whatever classes he offers.
He is indeed a caring professor, as he changed the syllabus several times throughout the quarter to let us get a better grade. I did get an A in the end, but to be honest, this is the most stressful course I have ever taken. Quizzes and midterms are extremely difficult, and I would probably recommend taking the course with an easier prof.
Really fair professor. Made a midterm question not really covered in class extra credit. Lots of homework, but it counts towards a large percentage of the grade. Tas and prof super accesible to do well.
Worst math teacher I’ve ever had. Never struggled in a math class before and I took AP Calc in high school. His explanations are overcomplicated for no reason. Lectures are all over the place and moves very quick. Took lots of time outside of class to understand the material by watching YouTube videos.
The first few weeks of school that were online due to the omicron were rough, but in person lectures were fantastic. He was always gave exceptional help and feedback in office hours/over email and was incredibly kind. His homework was definently tough, but doable, and his exams were pretty easy and his curve was insane. Would recommend.
Ashwin is a good professor considering the difficulty of the material. He can move really fast sometimes and he assigns a lot of homework. However, the HW problems are significantly harder than the exam problems, so you'll be fine for the tests as long as you're on top of your assignments. OH are helpful if you feel behind in any of the material.
Prof Tarikere is a really nice guy, but I really struggled in this class even though it was all topics I learned and understood back in AP Calc. Definitely was not prepared for midterm or final, lectures were a bit all over the place and hard to follow, so I ended up being more confused by going to class.
I feel like he makes things more confusing than they need to be, tests were pretty hard. Homework is pretty helpful yet doable though.
Made an account just to give Prof. Ashwin a review. Best dang professor I've had at UCSB. Very difficult subject, but the professor was very understanding and enthusiastic about the subject. You'll pass the class with enough practice. I hope to have Ashwin in a later quarter, please teach another analysis. Thank you.
