The lectures she gives are clear and I like the examples she made in the lectures, which helps students understanding the key concepts. However, there are a lot of homework and practice problems with strict grading policy. The midterm was straightforward, but final is hard . Do all homework and practice problems carefully, and you will be fine.
Although the homework assignments and lecture material were very straightforward, the highly difficult final and strict grading curve (top 20% get As, next 30% get Bs, etc.) makes this class extremely frustrating. I did learn a lot from this class about the foundations of stats/probability, but the final doesn't accurately reflect what I learned.
Ended up with an A, but that doesnt change my opinion on the class and Ravat, as a professor. Kept flip flopping on the grading scale, changed the homework format 4 times throughout the class, and was very unclear about certain final/midterm policies. Not to mention having most of final exam practice that wasnt on the final exam.
It really blows my mind how many people saying she is a bad teacher lol. she gives good lectures, she tells you everything you need to learn, you don't pay for your education just so you get an easy A and not learn anything. And don't complain after spending all your time on social media and going to clubs. You deserve your grade lol.
Not necessarily the most honest person, her practice exams for her final were nothing like her actual final and then says she is disappointed in us, and during her first few lectures she got really lazy and put little effort in.
Honestly do yourself a favor, and do not take any stat class with this prof, especially PSTAT120A. She is not a good lecturer and her test are not easy given the little amount of time you have to take it. Even if students complain to her how unfair the exams are or how the class is structured, she will not listen. Beware of the grade distribution.
Dr. Ravats class was lecture heavy, though she did provide handouts so that we could follow along. However, the final was too long for the time period we were given and some of the questions were not found in any examples that she gave. Do your homework and watch lectures and you will be fine for the most part.
The biggest issue I had with the final was time constraint. 1.5 hrs for 10 questions with sub problems was too short. 7 out of the 10 problems were basically from lecture and practice problems, 2 were hard but doable. Only 1 of them I thought was really unfair and never talked about. Anyone who says final covered nothing in lecture is ill prepared
horrible experience.
extremely horrible!!
She is great lecturer, with a very long lecture. Her lecture video is about 2 hours each time and the normal lecture slot is just 1h 15mins. The midterm is straightforward but final is awful. The grading policy is tough, and she always say write you steps, write your steps.... Wo xie ni ma ne sha bi. You will get an 0 if you didn't show steps.
During these hard times of the pandemic, she was not willing to work and be flexible with her students. I was dealing with Covid-19 for one month and she did not allow any excuses. On the final exam, she made it very difficult so that our grading distribution was "even." She also lies about Stats Department policies and comes up with her own policy
Everything before the final was perfectly fine: decent lectures, homework that helps us understand the material, and the midterm was pretty straightforward as well. The final was absolutely awful. The extra practices she posted dont help us in any way and most questions in the final were just impossible.
Great explanation on lectures! Homework assignments not heavy! Accent is not not a big deal! Attendance not mandatory! Lecture material is not extremely hard overall! Everything seems just so nice except that if you expect to see something that you have learned on the final, Im so sorry its going to LET YOU DOWN.
You will enjoy this class if you like being under pressure to go fast. Treats the syllabus like a bible and offers no flexibility on deadlines. Internet slow that day? Too bad. I don't think anyone saw that hard final coming either. Gave us too little time, and threw curveballs which we've never seen before. Inconsistent vibes.
This class is competitive and people get letter grade based on the average of the class, where only top 20% of the class can get an A. Her teaching style was easy to follow and helpful, but her final was too hard. She purposely made the test hard to down curve everyone's grade
Tbh her lectures were easy to follow, HW was reasonable, midterm wasn't bad (except for the fact she gave us 50mins to do 5 multi-part questions instead of the usual 1h 15m) but the final was TERRIBLE. 1h 30 mins to do 10 questions, and at least 3 of the questions were things we had never learned.
Gives Audio only lectures. Problems on the final are totally unrelated to lecture. Avoid if you can. But you can't avoid since she teach PSTAT120A every quarter.
Decent option for this class. Lectures are kinda boring/drawn out but informative. Homework was pretty fair and extra practice problems were provided if needed. The midterm was also fair, but it was kinda a time crunch. Main complaints are some final questions being completely different from any practice or homework and long, pre-written lectures
firstly, quizzes were cancelled and was replaced with homework. Her lectures aren't too bad altho she tends to go over the designated 2hr and 45mins ish. midterm was hard and we weren't prepared. THE TIME CRUNCH. 50minutes for the midterm and only 1 hour and 30mins for final. no exam or extra practices prepared us for the final questions.
She's a nice person and her class was organized well since she started using printed notes in lectures instead of her handwritten ones, but everything dropped from a cliff when the final hit: it's not even about how hard it was, it's simply that we've been tested on things we've not learned in class, ever, in anything we've done. Defines impossible
The midterm was pretty easy, except the time was too short. I did every single practice for the exam and 3 of the 10 questions came out of nowhere. They were obscure topics we only covered in lecture. I dont feel like the test really reflected what we learned, practiced, or things we were told were important.
THE FINAL FOR THIS CLASS IS 2 FAST
The reason why Ravats ratings are all so different is because she is very inconsistent. I enjoyed the way she taught and organized the class until the final hit. Our final was super rushed and many of the questions were like nothing we had gone over in class. No amount of studying couldve prepared me for that final.
