She's fine. If you are planning to take pstat 10, I would recommend her. She talks a lot about how to become a data engineer, which is not so related to this course but related to your future job.
Professor Ravat's PSTAT 10 course was well-structured and easy to do well in. Section attendance is mandatory and very helpful. The only issue is her (optional) lectures are very boring and often not helpful. I suspect this may change in the future, so I see no issue with enrolling in her courses.
honestly one of my favorite pstat teacher. the first four weeks were hard but got easy at the end. midterm was hard but she offered 10% back and the final was similar to the practice and midterm. hw were hard but doable and she has weekly online quizzes worth 25%. she's so well organized and loves talking to study's. she really cares and sweet
Genuinely don't understand the Ravat hate on RMP, I thought she was perfect for this course. Lectures and course structure were very organized. No midterm - just biweekly quizzes that could ALL be retaken at the end. Final was not bad either. Only one hw assignment per week. Made the course very approachable and was always asking for feedback!
Midterm practice questions were not on the midterm. She is the worst PSTAT professor ever, so please do not take her if you want to pass 120B. Awful grading system, and she sometimes skips trivial steps so it is hard to follow along with her.
Bruh half the questions on her midterm weren't even on the midterm practice Also she's pretty incompetent at almost everything about teaching: course structure, lectures, and just explaining things in general. Materials on canvas are frequently incomplete or removed so it's very difficult to review without AI or ULAs/TAs
last quarter i had her and i dropped her class and it was honestly quite a lot better than this one, at least exam wise but this quarter she's regressed, and her class always has some stupid gimmick like incomplete lecture slides and then her lectures suck anyway because it's just a slideshow of a bunch of abstract formulas no actual context
She has improved significantly in recent years and has made a clear effort to do so. Her rating is so low because of mostly courses from years ago, but her classes are quite approachable now (I've taken 2 recently). Used GPT for lectures instead of attending which worked for me. Homework/quizzes weekly but they're helpful, exams were reasonable.
The homework is good practice for the final exam and she truly wants students to learn. She doesn't post lecture notes for a week or so, so if you dislike going to lecture probably don't take her. But I would say she is a great professor.
She's nice and her midterms and final weren't that bad. Just do the homework and practice it and you'll be more than fine.
Professor Ravat has a unique teaching style, but if you engage with it, the class can be manageable. The exams emulate the homework, and the use of a cheat sheet helps. Unstuck AI and other study tools proved invaluable for preparing.
Besides extra credit not helping, I don't think there's anything to complain about. I think she's actually a really good professor. The practice test is really helpful and the exams are similar to the homework so just make sure you understand hw and you'll be fine.
super nice professor. Midterm easy if understand the HW. really willing to offer help. so nice. Highly recommend
Spends 30+ minutes of each 75-minute lecture wasting time instead of doing examples. Lectures are strictly theory and provide no help with actual word problems. Be prepared to study a lot.
Good professor overall, exams were very fair and similar to the homework. She also made a great final study guide. I understand the frustration of others with the extra credit not really helping anyone's grade, but not sure why the reviews are so negative otherwise. She is an overall good professor. Clearly cares about students if you talk to her.
Many comments here give Ravat a low grade, but I do think she is a good professor. Her lectures are easy to understand. As long as you fully understand the course materials and assignments posed on canvas, you'll find that the mid-term and the final are not that hard to do.
Ravat set up this course in a good way, hit on the application of a lot of Comp. Stats topics, and brushed over the proofs as well, but the application is what was tested. Pace of the course was relaxed, and the projects were interesting. It was hard to ask her questions about the material though; and course structure wasn't clear. TA was clutch.
My favorite class in UCSB! Dr. Ravat designed a great course on Monte Carlo Methods & Social Network Analysis. Great class to have a few hands on projects and connect with other classmates. She even planned out a career panel and brought in data scientists who worked in NASA, Amazon, and JPMorgan. Take it if ever offer again! Easy & Fair Grading!
Low quality lecture, don't expect to understand anything in class but take ton of your time ahead exams to understand yourself. Low quality office hour, not even good as ULA or TA. Uncleared grading and fake promise in extra credit. One of the WORST professor I ever had. Stop complaining like a baby in class about the rating you get from students
Disappointed. She acted like a caring professor offering lots of extra credit assignments which was heavy, but they are totally fake that does not helped with your final score. Not telling you how much extra credit will be added. Said will add more credit to midterm but nothing is real. Will never take any course with her and she disgusted me.
Took pstat10 and 120b with her and I would say her classes are easy if you do the work. HW and quizzes are good practices for exams. final was almost the same as the study guide and a cheat sheet was allowed. Personally think midterm was harder due to shorter test time
Professor cared about the class but had a lot of fake promises that she did not deliver. Told everyone to do extra credit which would help our final grade (it did not). The final was similar to the homework and practice final she provided so that was nice, but to later found out I got a 68% even though we got a cheat sheet.
Allows notes on exams. No practice midterm, no partial credit. Final had practice with solutions, I put them on my notes. Final had EXACT SAME problems, I copied all solutions and explanations. Got a 70%, couldn't view on gradescope. All extra credit is fake. Promised to add points to everyone's midterm, didn't do this. Treats us like dogs.
I am not a fan of how she has a heavy emphasis on proofs during lecture. That being said, she is a very caring teacher and genuinely wants her students to succeed. I don't think she's necessarily a difficult professor, I just think that the material in 120B is just intrinsically difficult. Very hard class, but I wouldn't shy away from Ravat.
