Although he is not here anymore, I still want to thank him for his amazing calculus lectures. Besides, he curved the exam greatly every time and did provided lots of useful materials for us to review, hope he can be back someday.
I took Professor Chen for both Math 4A and 6A, and those classes were some of the best coming into the school. The exams are taken through WebWork, as is the homework, so you really need to understand the material. He gives more than enough time to take the exams, and if you watch the notes and actually do the homework, you'll be fine overall
Prof Chen is very organized. He embedded proofs into the curriculum which is new to many students taking this course. Healthy amount of weekly webwork sets, a midterm, and a final. If you watch lectures and complete the homework you will be fine. Material is more abstract than it is computational, which can be harder for some students.
Prof Chen had really well organized lectures videos that he posted on a good schedule, unlike some of my other profs. His lectures were so clear and notes were easy to follow I wish every class was structured like his. Never opened the textbook, I never did the section work. Midterm was medium, final was easy (maybe b/c I actually studied).
He's an amazing professor. Well organized lectures and straightforward exams. He is also pretty accessible and warm both in and outside class. He would always reply to students' emails quickly and try to help you sort out problems you have. Highly recommend.
Professor Eric Chen is a real treasure for UCSB. I am so sad that he doesn't teach math 6b or math8 in winter quarter 2021. He is very approachable outside the class, very nice and warm. Organized lectures and awesome handwriting. He will always be my first priority choice.
taken online during COVID. hw was worth 60%, really saved my grade(i suck at math and was expecting to do worse lol). CLAS also really helped me. lectures weren't the most engaging, but gets the content across. midterm(curved) and final were fair, given lots of practice exams to study from. overall, a fair prof and very helpful during office hours.
Probably due to remote instr., the class was graded pretty easy this quarter, 60 percent of the grade was homework and decent curves on tests. The class is definitely very hard, but he does teach pretty well and provides a lot of extra explanations for you in case you don't understand the subject. Recommended, at least in remote instr.
Prof Eric is a very caring and nice guy. He responds to emails very often and in a very detailed manner. His lectures aren't amazing but they're good and get the job done. He provides LOTS of examples in his lectures which really help with the homework. Learn and understand the concepts! Don't just memorize! It often won't help on the tests.
A very nice guy and fairly good lecturer overall. Lectures were ASYNC. Weekly homework, with some tough questions not covered in lecture, thus you have to go to office hours for help. but most concepts covered during the video lectures. Somewhat conceptual heavy questions that are fairly hard. 60% of the grade was hw, which was a blessing!
Eric is hands down the best math prof I've had at SB. He's clearly brilliant and knowledgeable about the subject, never once stumbling over anything in the material or any questions that were posed to him in class. Yet he took time to explain new concepts in a slow, precise way that made it a joy to learn from him. I highly recommend his class.
Hea a GREAT prof and doesnt deserve the rating he has. Is very clear during lectures and is always willing to help, whether to clarify mid explanation or to explain it again after lecture. He always listens and adapts his pacing/hw to the comfort of his students. Hes a visual thinker, which is amazing if you are too. Overall, a great prof/person.
I received A+ for my math 4A class, but Chen really destroyed me.
Dr. Chen really cares about every student in class. He will answer questions in detail. For those give him low rates, they didnt put a lot of effort on this course. Most the questions these students asked proved that they didnt review the previous lectures, and even didnt understand the concepts. But the prof really did well in explaining things
His lectures are inspiring. If you put some effort on this course, it is an easy A. Cuz this course is not designed to harm your grade.
His lectures are inspiring since he gives all the proofs and deductions that are comprehensible to our level. He's also quite generous in terms of grading since he curved midterm and final up for ten points. Although he did not go through all the materials he planned to, he has done a great job in general.
he made this class unnecessary hard
the midterm and final are challenging also, he can't explain materials very well
His lectures are challenging but organized and inspirational. His tests are hard and need lots of thinking, but he gives nice curves. You have to review the previous lectures so that you can catch up since these lectures are all connected. But when you really understand his lectures, you will be inspired since the contents are in much depth.
The lectures are really inspirational. He always explains every concept in detail and makes sure the students understand well, which makes him spend a lot of time answering questions in class though. His tests are really challenging, but he gives nice curves. You can really learn a lot from him since the contents are in more depth than other profs.
Just Khan Academy the class, I sat in the front and could not see the board since his body covered his writing. He is new to teaching so I hope he improves as a lecturer since he is a good person and sometimes he explained things well.
Tests are curved by adding 10 points to each people. Overall grades are no less than your final grades, so you can skip all lectures and sections and get an A by doing well in finals. Many things were not thoroughly explained, and Khan academy was way more helpful.
Professor Chen talks lots of details and many key points on lecture which make students confused sometimes, so you should listen really carefully and because of hand writing on whiteboard, you had better have a seat in the first three rows. He respects to every students and answer questions on lecture. Nice curve.
He's a hard professor, but he knows it, so he curves his tests. Tests are very content heavy rather than computational. You have to understand the content really well to do well on his tests, but he's really open to questions during lectures. If you ask him questions, pay attention to his lectures, and go to section, you can get an A.
