Although he is not here anymore, I still want to thank him for his amazing calculus lectures. Besides, he curved the exam greatly every time and did provided lots of useful materials for us to review, hope he can be back someday.
I took Professor Chen for both Math 4A and 6A, and those classes were some of the best coming into the school. The exams are taken through WebWork, as is the homework, so you really need to understand the material. He gives more than enough time to take the exams, and if you watch the notes and actually do the homework, you'll be fine overall
Prof Chen is very organized. He embedded proofs into the curriculum which is new to many students taking this course. Healthy amount of weekly webwork sets, a midterm, and a final. If you watch lectures and complete the homework you will be fine. Material is more abstract than it is computational, which can be harder for some students.
Prof Chen had really well organized lectures videos that he posted on a good schedule, unlike some of my other profs. His lectures were so clear and notes were easy to follow I wish every class was structured like his. Never opened the textbook, I never did the section work. Midterm was medium, final was easy (maybe b/c I actually studied).
He's an amazing professor. Well organized lectures and straightforward exams. He is also pretty accessible and warm both in and outside class. He would always reply to students' emails quickly and try to help you sort out problems you have. Highly recommend.
Professor Eric Chen is a real treasure for UCSB. I am so sad that he doesn't teach math 6b or math8 in winter quarter 2021. He is very approachable outside the class, very nice and warm. Organized lectures and awesome handwriting. He will always be my first priority choice.
taken online during COVID. hw was worth 60%, really saved my grade(i suck at math and was expecting to do worse lol). CLAS also really helped me. lectures weren't the most engaging, but gets the content across. midterm(curved) and final were fair, given lots of practice exams to study from. overall, a fair prof and very helpful during office hours.
Probably due to remote instr., the class was graded pretty easy this quarter, 60 percent of the grade was homework and decent curves on tests. The class is definitely very hard, but he does teach pretty well and provides a lot of extra explanations for you in case you don't understand the subject. Recommended, at least in remote instr.
Prof Eric is a very caring and nice guy. He responds to emails very often and in a very detailed manner. His lectures aren't amazing but they're good and get the job done. He provides LOTS of examples in his lectures which really help with the homework. Learn and understand the concepts! Don't just memorize! It often won't help on the tests.
A very nice guy and fairly good lecturer overall. Lectures were ASYNC. Weekly homework, with some tough questions not covered in lecture, thus you have to go to office hours for help. but most concepts covered during the video lectures. Somewhat conceptual heavy questions that are fairly hard. 60% of the grade was hw, which was a blessing!
Eric is hands down the best math prof I've had at SB. He's clearly brilliant and knowledgeable about the subject, never once stumbling over anything in the material or any questions that were posed to him in class. Yet he took time to explain new concepts in a slow, precise way that made it a joy to learn from him. I highly recommend his class.
Hea a GREAT prof and doesnt deserve the rating he has. Is very clear during lectures and is always willing to help, whether to clarify mid explanation or to explain it again after lecture. He always listens and adapts his pacing/hw to the comfort of his students. Hes a visual thinker, which is amazing if you are too. Overall, a great prof/person.
