I'll give an overview of Pan's 6a course. Hw is 25, Mt is 35, and Final is 40 percent of the total grade. Lectures are very detailed and fairly rigorous. Hw sets contain on avg. of 10-12 Q, which take on avg 1.5-2 hours to finish. Mt contains 7 Q, 12 subQ, 75 min. Final has 7 longer Q, 11 subQ, 100 min. Median score (45/70, 55/80) gets curved to B.
Most probably failed his class but not because of anything on his part. His lectures are well structured and very thorough. The homework is solid, and the exam questions are very similar to the examples he gives in lecture. Overall a difficult but well designed course and a solid professor.
Pan goes in depth in lectures but they don't apply to his homework OR his tests. Also, his tests are damn near impossible to finish within the time limit. I wish I had another professor this guy just isn't fun.
Prof. Pan is knowledgeable. However, there are no title for each note he gave us, so its hard to understand which topics he is talking about. The questions in the exams are not easy, including many details things. His curve is pretty generous though, which basically saved my grade. (Pumped from B- to A-)
Do not be fooled by the avg point 3.7/5! If you take his class, you will face a horrible quarter! He demonstrates theorems by using simple examples, but these example are useless when dealing with homework. I spent 6 hours on his hw each week! In addition to hw, students are graded by mid and final. Both of them are hard, minor mistakes mean fail.
Lecture and section are not required but strongly recommended if you want to get A. About 15 questions on webwork per week. No quiz. 1 midterm and 1 final. Tough exams. If you don't study hard, you might fail. He curves up or down depends on the performance of his class. He says that he gives 43% of his class A-/A this quarter.
He's very good at explaining things and provides examples that are similar to the homework + exam problems. The exams are tough, but he offered a midterm retake and a FAT curve (median student to a B). Even if you don't like his lectures, familiarize yourself with the lecture examples, because they will be on the exams. CLAS practice tests helped.
Stay away from this guy!!! His lectures are too conceptual and even the examples he gives are theoretical. There is no textbook but I think we really need one for extra learning. Direct quote:" You don't need a textbook, just my notes are enough." ??? Your fate is decided by the midterm and final, if you fail one of them, you fail!! Take care!
Covered everything you needed for the homeworks and the exams in lecture. No need for textbook, which I really enjoyed. His lectures contained a lot of material and difficult concepts, but he provided proofs and examples, which made them easier to grasp. CLAS also really helped. Overall, he's really good, just make sure to stay on top of your stuff
Good professor, who makes lecture clear and the final is not hard.
Professor Pan does a great job teaching the topics and concepts, but if youre not good at proofs, this will be the hardest class youll ever take. I spent 12 hours on average for each hw assignment. Make sure you understand the notes, revise your hw, and find tutoring sources if necessary. I never did so poorly on hw before. Still a solid choice.
This quarter for my 6A class Pan didn't give a practice test for the midterm because "he didn't want everybody getting an A" (that is a direct quote). I managed to find a practice test he had made for the exact same class two years ago, but it was behind a paywall. He denied students the resources they needed to succeed in his class ON PURPOSE.
Pay attention and ask questions. Make sure your proofs make logical sense. The curve will save you, I hope. Nonetheless, funny guy and good lecture
Class challenging but great teaching. Still tricky proving stuff but takes much practice
Professor Pan has very easy to understand notes and lectures and he is very clear about his expectations. Great pace, reasonable homework and good practice tests. Very easy to get in touch with if you have questions!
I cannot believe they only grade half of the HW randomly. He calls it luck and says this is how the real world is. Well hey Professor, you are VERY WRONG. This is not how the real world is like, I have worked in industry for a while part time, and it is not luck. Weird grading scheme. Do not take this guy.
Lectures are clear, but very fast-paced. Attendance is optional and his notes are posted online. He gives a proper amount of homework and his practice tests are very similar to the miderms/final. He's also kind of funny and just a nice guy in general, which is a plus.
Good lecturer. Tells you what you need to do. Tests and homework are straightforward. If you practice, you pass. Wash your hands.
Pan is a great professor, he makes the class clear and easy to understand, has very thorough lecture notes, and provides practice problems. Super organized and nice prof!
His lectures are great and he explains everything well
He is ok at teaching but his grading sucks. Even though I got an A+ from his course, I still feel that his grading sucks!!!
He intentionally skipped a lot of materials that should be covered in 4B. In addition, he subtracts points from exams if you write the wrong section time! Even if you have contacted your TA to unofficially switch sections, he would still say that you are unlawfully attending other sections!
Professor Pan is okay at teaching, he lectures with plenty of examples which is nice but doesn't really provide much physical intuition. Mainly just gives definitions, shows proofs, and then examples. Gives practice tests which are basically easier versions of the test. Had a generous curve, which was definitely necessary. Not awful, not fantastic.
dont need to go to section ever!!! dont need to go class if u understand his lectures, but make sure u understand every part of his lectures because its very similar to his exams. biggest curve of all time, category: weight/myscore hw: 20%/100% midterm: 30%/70% final: 50%/55% overall grade B+
