Really an awful class. 3 hours long and he's strict on no laptops or phone usage. Required textbook was a book he wrote himself. Don't do it
I don't really understand all the bad reviews... Professor Robinson is absolutely the best professor I've ever had and his 3 hour classes went by fast and even left me wanting more. This class will change your way of thinking and has reignited my passion to learn more. I plan on taking more of his classes and really recommend his SOC 122 GI class!
Weekly 100 + page readings with 1000 word reflections & 1500 word Final essay. Im pretty sure the T.A.s grade the assignments and are meticulous while grading. They have a difficult time responding to emails same with the Professor. Only 1 extra credit assignment for 5pts (1000 words too). Graduate level work for undergrads :/ wouldnt recommend
egotistical and very full of himself but overall, wasn't a terrible class. i loved the actual content of the class so doing the work wasn't absolutely awful. tons of reading and lots of writing. but easy class to get an A in if you work hard enough!
Lectures are very long and iClicker is used several times per lecture which is very annoying. Lectures are mandatory and he docs point for missing them. There's no phones or laptops allowed. there are weekly 1000+ word essay reflections. No exams only 3 big writing assignments and weekly reflections. If you don't like writing don' take this class.
That class itself is very reading heavy and the lectures are mandatory. Professor if very dogmatic about attendance (iClicker 2-3 times per lecture). no phones or laptops to take notes. Weekly essay reflections of 1000+ words. No exams only writing and LOTS of it.
100+ pages of reading and 1000 words due per week. Was the most difficult class I took online. He was not accommodating despite difficult circumstances. Talks about himself a lot.
Kicked someone out of class for sleeping. Will not allow laptops or phone use. No flexibility and completely unaccommodating. Awful class by an awful person. Makes u buy the textbook he wrote
Professor Robinson clearly structured his class and it was an overall easy course. We had weekly reflections of a min of 1,000 words and they're super easy if you do the reading. A lot of books were require but there are a lot of free online options. This was one of the easier courses taken at ucsb and I learned a lot.
Professor Robinson is the BEST professor in the UCSB Sociology department. For this quarter, I take both his classes, SOC 130LA and SOC 185RT. Both of the classes are interesting and meaningful. A 1k+ reflection essay per week for both of the classes, the content should reflect the readings. If you work hard and complete homework, A is quite easy.
This is my second class with him. He is egotistical and his lectures are incredibly dense, but I have never been so inspired by a class. He will teach you what no other professor will teach. Every lecture blew my mind. There is a lot of writing but generally is an easy A if you keep up with the work. The 3 hours fly by bc the class is so engaging.
I hated the man, but content-wise, this class is one of the best I have ever taken. This class honestly radicalized me, which I'm thankful for and wouldn't take back. But I'd never do it again! His lectures were mediocre, he talked too fast and his ego really annoyed me. The least accomodating professor I've ever had. Insane amount of reading/work.
Professor Robinson is definitely one of my favorite professors at UCSB. He is so knowledgeable with different perspectives. The class is not mandatory, however, I strongly recommend you to attend it since the lecture was not been recording (slides were posted on GS). Besides, get ready for tremendous readings and writings, not an easy A class.
This professor clearly has a huge ego problem and was very unaccommodating towards students. That being said, he taught me more than I have ever learned in a class. He truly broadened my perspective every lecture and I looked forward to going to class, which I never had felt before. A lot of work but readings can be skimmed.
Lectures great. Readings fantastic. Assignments meaningless, had no educational value. TA's graded inconsistently. Lectures weren't recorded so good luck part-time workers, parents, and other timezones. 7 questions from students posted online left ignored with 0 replies from as early as Nov 11 (30 days with still no TA or prof responses).
If youre one to complain about workload, this class isnt for you. Otherwise, he will definitely challenge you not just in terms of material, but how much you can handle. It was a lot of work but what you get out of this class is amazing & worth learning. Hes very passionate and if you wanna learn about the flaws of capitalism this class is it.
I'm sorry but requiring a documentary, three hour lecture, a full book, and a 2 page single spaced paper every week is ridiculous. This is the worst class ive ever taken. He won't record the lectures so if you cant make it you are screwed. Students told him that it was a lot of work to handle and he basically said i get that, but im not changing it
Prof is opinionated and gives a one sided perspective of anticapitalism in his class. He requires a weekly 1000 word reflection on the lecture, reading and film watched for the week. He makes his expectations clear from the beginning. The class shouldnt be taken by avid complainers. It is difficult, but it is a UD course at a UC. He knows his stuff
required lots of books to read every wk there's a reflection - 2pgs, single spaced, about 1000 words used to be 2 full pgs, but changed after students explained how stressful it was; 2 essays, lectures ONLY live talks fast powerpoints posted, TA's were more accommodating, the only way im passing is by sharing lec & book notes w other students
Unaccomdating. Even with students collectively emailing him about the course, students are ignored. Overworked and excessive reading. One essay a week.
My third class with Prof Robinson and his online classes are bad_ Lectures and readings, fantastic_ tack-sharp and answers questions like a fax machine_Two TA's grade differently, communication is on a per-student basis_I need a spot in the asylum if I'm writing the same 8 1000+ word ramblings about global capitalism with only vague topics to go by
professor robinson is less than accommodating. his online courses expect you to read well over 100pages a week, attend a three hour lecture, and write a 1500 word paper each week. if you're looking for an easy A, this class is NOT it. he won't even let you email him, let alone hear you out about your concerns.
Worst class ever. Professor who doesn't care about his students at all.
No tests. 3 long papers ( 1 about 2 movies, 1 about news articles and 1 about the novel), weekly assignments about readings and iclicker. Click in 3 times for each class meetup. You have to put in work for an A. You need the course reader. Don't need to do reading, skim thru them for the assignments. Offers extra credit Very long class. Dry lecture
