Super passionate about biology and genetics. He's just a bit hard to understand during lecture because of his accent, and he sometimes makes mistakes about what he's saying. Just gets a bit confusing for the students.
Hardest class I've ever taken aside from Ochem because of Lalos tests. I took this course over summer- 5 weeks. We had loads of material up until the day of each exam. Talks fast at times and makes bad test questions which could be interpreted multiple ways. Average on the first midterm was 55%. A 3rd of the students didn't pass.
Bio with Lalo is such a joy. Really glad I got to take him for the intro MCDB courses.
To study for the midterms just want all the lectures again. If you understand the concepts you can easily get an A. Also don't take the online quizzes, iClicker accuracy, and worksheets lightly because those are your free points. Lalo is a great teacher and if you want to put in the effort you will get in the grade.
Lalo and Mike are the best professors I've had so far, I want to go back a retake their class because they genuinely care about their students. All the lectures are recorded and posted online so if you relisten to them you'll be fine. The tests are like the weekly quizzes just different numbers. If you're struggling talk to them they want to help.
Lalo is one of the best teachers I've had at UCSB. He's amazing at explaining things clearly and has a great sense of humor. Tests are not easy, but they are fair and it's easier to succeed in this class than in the big lecture. 10/10 would recommend!
Lalo is an amazing professor, super nice and always willing to help. Tests are a little complex and hard but the professors are really there to help. Go to lecture and section and study, and you'll be okay. Online quizzes, iclicker, and section worksheets help to boost grade a little.
Lalo is undoubtedly one of the smartest and best professors in the MCDB department. He posts lectures online. His tests are based completely OFF OF THE LECTURES. Strict memorization will not help you, as he tests on application of concepts. Ample effort is required to pass the class, but it is easily doable. Easy going, fun guy to talk to at OH.
hard to understand. sometimes would mumble off& I had no idea what he was saying. Tests had many mistakes. Quizzes were almost as hard as tests, but were worth only 5% together. Reached out for help& he was completely unhelpful& scolded&insulted me for asking. Tests were hard& had ridiculous expectations. Said they were only lecture based -- untrue
The worst professor I've had at UCSB. Very difficult to understand, tests were extremely difficult, and all of his exams/quizzes were full of mistakes. He is a nice guy and accessible outside of class but he was a terrible professor.
I took him for a simple freshman bio seminar and he was great! Really liked his enthusiasm. He and Wilton really gave me some good info about bio and what it entails, I highly recommend the seminar! You get a lot out of it.
